Data Engineer / Network Traffic Analysis

£500 - £550 per day | Inside IR35 | 6-Month Contract | Hybrid - 2 Days per Week in Islington, London

83zero is recruiting for a Data Engineer / Network Traffic Analysis specialist to join a highly technical team working with large volumes of network and traffic data.

This is not a traditional Data Engineering position. We are looking for someone who combines strong networking knowledge with hands‑on packet and traffic analysis, particularly using Wireshark, PCAP and tcpdump.

You will be working at packet and protocol level, capturing, investigating and analysing network traffic before turning that information into usable data for further processing and analysis.

What you'll be doing

  • Capturing and analysing network traffic using Wireshark, PCAP and tcpdump

  • Investigating network behaviour at packet and protocol level

  • Analysing TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, ports, protocols and traffic flows

  • Filtering packet captures to identify patterns, anomalies and potential issues

  • Troubleshooting network connectivity, latency, routing and protocol issues

  • Extracting, transforming and analysing technical/network data

  • Using Python and SQL to work with network, telemetry or data sets

  • Working alongside data, networking and security teams

  • Supporting cloud-based data and network environments

What we're looking for

You should have strong hands‑on experience across:

  • Wireshark

  • PCAP / packet capture

  • Network traffic analysis

  • Network sniffing

  • tcpdump

  • TCP/IP

  • DNS

  • HTTP / HTTPS

  • Network protocols and troubleshooting

  • Python and/or SQL

Experience with GCP / Google Cloud, BigQuery, Pub/Sub or Dataflow would be beneficial, but it is not essential. The priority is genuine hands‑on network traffic and packet analysis experience.
