About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Python Developer / Data Engineer to join our Client on a 6-month contract in Melbourne. This role combines core Python development with data engineering, focusing on building automated data pipelines, transforming raw data into reliable datasets, and developing reporting solutions that support business analytics and operational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Python applications for data processing and manipulation.
  • Design, build, and maintain ETL workflows and automated data pipelines.
  • Write and optimize SQL queries for relational databases and large datasets.
  • Integrate Python applications with databases using ORMs or direct database connections.
  • Develop and maintain scheduled jobs and workflow automation using Apache Airflow or similar scheduling tools.
  • Generate structured reporting outputs, including Excel, PDF, and dashboard-based reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams to deliver scalable data solutions.
  • Apply software engineering best practices, including Git version control, unit testing, code documentation, and CI/CD.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong proficiency in Python, including data structures, object-oriented programming (OOP), and exception handling.
  • Hands-on experience with Pandas and NumPy for data analysis and processing.
  • Strong SQL skills with experience writing and optimizing complex queries.
  • Experience working with relational databases and large datasets.
  • Experience developing ETL pipelines and workflow automation.
  • Knowledge of Apache Airflow or similar workflow scheduling tools.
  • Experience generating reports using Excel (OpenPyXL), PDF libraries, Plotly, or Power BI.
  • Familiarity with Git, Agile methodologies, unit testing, and CI/CD pipelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data engineering or reporting solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
