Summary
Contract Senior Power BI & Azure Data Engineer (via Balance Recruitment) strengthening a large Azure data platform for a NSW public sector organisation in Homebush, Sydney. Day to day: resolving Azure Synapse/Databricks issues, fixing PySpark and Delta Lake pipelines, and rebuilding an enterprise Power BI dashboard. Up to $1,100/day, hybrid, through June 2027.

We're partnering with a highly regarded organisation that plays a critical role across the state. They are seeking a Senior Power BI & Azure Data Engineer to help strengthen and modernise a large-scale data and reporting environment supporting operational decision-making.
This is a hands-on technical role for someone who enjoys solving complex platform issues, improving data quality and building scalable reporting solutions that have genuine organisational impact.
What you'll be doing
You'll work closely with the Performance Reporting & Analysis team to:
- Resolve complex Azure Synapse and Databricks platform issues
- Investigate and remediate PySpark, Delta Lake and pipeline failures
- Improve reliability of enterprise reporting and overnight data refreshes
- Integrate new data sources into an established Azure data platform
- Redevelop a flagship corporate Power BI dashboard from the ground up
- Optimise Power BI data models, DAX calculations and user experience
- Implement monitoring, alerting and operational support processes
- Document technical procedures and upskill internal team members
What we're looking for
We're interested in speaking with experienced Azure Data Engineers and Power BI specialists who can demonstrate:
- Strong Azure Synapse experience
- Commercial Databricks expertise
- Hands-on PySpark development experience
- Strong Delta Lake knowledge
- Power BI dashboard development and optimisation experience
- Experience supporting production data environments
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Certifications
You'll hold either:
- Microsoft Azure Data certs
- Databricks Certification
