Summary

Kestrix, a London climate-tech startup, seeks a Data Engineering & Automation Intern to build a Python pipeline that extracts structured data from retrofit assessment and borescope PDFs using LLM APIs, creating ground-truth datasets to validate its building-energy AI. Hybrid role, min 20 hrs/week, up to 3 months.

Data Engineering & Automation Intern – London

Kestrix, a London climate tech startup, is hiring a Data Engineering & Automation Intern to build a Python pipeline that turns retrofit assessment and borescope PDFs into structured data for its building energy AI.

  • Company: Kestrix
  • Location: London, hybrid (at least 2 days a week at the Geovation office in Clerkenwell)
  • Employment type: Internship – full time or part time (minimum 20 hours per week)
  • Duration: Up to 3 months, depending on availability
  • Salary: £26k pro rata

About Kestrix

Kestrix uses drone-based thermal imaging and AI to map and quantify how heat escapes from buildings, assess heat pump and solar readiness, and generate energy retrofit plans for homes at scale.

Its data and patent-pending algorithmic analysis help landlords, local authorities and energy suppliers understand the optimal upgrade pathway for each home – enabling the effective allocation of scarce time, labour and financial resources into housing decarbonisation and regeneration.

To date, Kestrix has mapped more than 10,000 homes, serving 25+ enterprise customers across the UK, Germany and the US. It has raised £3.5M from leading PropTech and climate VCs (including Pi Labs, the Conduit EIS Fund and Carbon13) and government bodies such as Innovate UK and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). As part of an agile team of 12, you will have real ownership and impact from day one.

The role

As Data Engineering & Automation Intern, you will build a pipeline that extracts structured data from building survey PDFs, such as retrofit assessment reports and borescope reports. This data will be linked to existing image annotations and used as ground truth to validate Kestrix’s algorithms. The goal: any uploaded assessment PDF reliably yields accurate, structured data, every time.

Key responsibilities

  • Write Python to parse retrofit assessment and borescope reports with varying layouts and terminology, using LLM APIs and document-extraction tools.
  • Link extracted data to existing image annotations to create ground-truth datasets for algorithm validation.
  • Support the ground-truth data collection campaign as needed.
  • Work closely with the engineering team on technical decisions and platform integration.

What you’ll bring

  • A computer science or data science background, or a strong personal interest in coding – a degree is not required.
  • Comfort writing and debugging Python and SQL.
  • Some exposure to data modelling, databases or structured data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, a precise approach and comfort working with messy, real-world data.
  • Clear communication and the ability to work independently, knowing when to ask for help.
  • An interest in buildings, energy or climate.

Nice to have

  • Experience with PDF parsing or text and table extraction.
  • Familiarity with Python data tooling.
  • Basic web development skills.

Benefits

  • 25 days paid time off (pro rata), plus the week between Christmas and New Year and a day off on your birthday.
  • Flexible hours outside core working time.
  • Regular team socials and wellness perks.
  • Real ownership of a data engineering project with direct impact on building decarbonisation.

Interview process

  • Interview with the hiring manager, Matt (CTO and co-founder) – 30 minutes.
  • Technical interview and case study – 30 minutes.
