Data & Integration Engineer
Summary
Build and maintain the integrations, data pipelines, and backend services that power VMS's AI agent workforce for healthcare operations — connecting external systems via REST APIs/webhooks, ensuring data quality, and deploying reliable, secure production infrastructure using Python/TypeScript, SQL/PostgreSQL, cloud platforms, and LLM APIs.
About the role
You'll work closely with the product and engineering team to connect VMS to external systems and turn messy operational data into reliable workflows. You'll help take VMS from prototype to production by building the integrations, data infrastructure, and backend workflows that power the agent workforce.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain REST API and third-party system integrations
- Map external data into clean canonical data models
- Build pipelines, webhooks, scheduled syncs, queues, and event-driven workflows
- Implement reconciliation, deduplication, validation, and data-quality monitoring
- Develop backend services and tools used by VMS's AI agents
- Implement OAuth, authentication, permissions, and auditability
- Design for retries, idempotency, failures, and data integrity
- Build human-in-the-loop workflows for actions requiring review or approval
- Work with LLM APIs and agent frameworks while keeping execution reliable and testable
- Help establish secure production infrastructure for real customer environments
About you
- 5+ years of relevant data, backend, software, or integration engineering experience
- Strong experience in several of: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL/PostgreSQL, REST APIs, OAuth 2.0/JWT, relational data modeling, canonical data models, ETL/data pipelines, webhooks and asynchronous processing, cloud platforms such as GCP/AWS/Azure, automated testing, data reconciliation and observability, Git/CI/CD, and secure handling of sensitive data
- Experience with AI/LLM APIs, tool calling, agent workflows, or AI-assisted development is valuable
- Comfortable learning unfamiliar APIs and business domains quickly
- Able to design systems as well as implement them
- Able to use modern AI development tools while maintaining strong testing and engineering discipline
- Healthcare experience is a plus but not required; helpful experience includes FHIR/FHIR R4, SMART on FHIR, Redox or other healthcare interoperability platforms, HL7v2, X12 healthcare transactions, EHR integrations such as Epic, athenahealth, Oracle Health/Cerner, eClinicalWorks, or NextGen, eligibility, claims, prior authorization, remittance, or revenue-cycle workflows, HIPAA-regulated applications or systems handling PHI/ePHI, and healthcare security and audit controls
About us
VMS is building an always-on agent workforce for healthcare operations. Our specialized AI agents continuously monitor operations, identify issues and opportunities, prepare and execute workflows within defined policies, and bring in a person when judgment or approval is required.
Why VMS: You'll join a small team building at the intersection of AI agents, data integrations, healthcare operations, human-in-the-loop workflows, and real-world execution. This is a chance to shape the technical foundation of a new AI-native healthcare platform, with meaningful ownership from 0 to 1. You don't need healthcare experience on day one, and we'll support the right engineer in learning the domain.
