Want to help change the future of retail? Are you looking for a unique and visible role within Trust & Risk Data Science at eBay?

Fast-paced, dynamic, and proactive, eBay’s Trust & Risk team is dedicated to making eBay a safe and trusted platform for the millions of buyers and sellers who make up the eBay community.

Key Trust & Risk initiatives at eBay span platform communications, seller protections and policy experiences, buyer and seller feedback, the eBay Money Back Guarantee, seller performance, new seller onboarding, and transaction risk management. The team is committed to maintaining and enhancing eBay as a safe and reliable marketplace while strengthening how we measure, understand, and reduce transaction-related losses. We continuously improve the customer experience while ensuring eBay remains a secure and trusted global marketplace.

As a Data Scientist in the Trust & Risk team at eBay, you will work directly with Trust and Risk business leaders and partner teams across Product, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design to identify opportunities, assess impacts, and shape business and operational strategies. Your role will involve leading complex analytical work, developing quantitative frameworks, and using predictive analytics to guide marketplace decisions, improve decision quality, and reduce transaction risk and losses. You will help define the measurement infrastructure and analytical strategy needed to balance customer experience, risk, and business outcomes, while driving measurable impact and scalability across the Trust & Risk organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive Strategic Insights: Lead strategic, operational, and analytical work to shape long-term solutions, secure cross-functional alignment, and influence leaders across Trust & Risk on opportunities to improve customer outcomes and reduce marketplace and transaction risk.

  • Analyze & Identify Opportunities: Lead deep-dive analyses of complex marketplace and transaction risk issues, identify material opportunities to improve customer experience and trust, and develop actionable recommendations to reduce losses for buyers, sellers, and eBay.

  • Define & Monitor Metrics: Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and standardized measurement frameworks to track customer trust, transaction risk, enterprise loss, decision quality, false positives, residual exposure, and return on investment. Use these metrics to diagnose underlying drivers, evaluate effectiveness, and inform strategic priorities.

  • Accountability & Results: Define business objectives, establish success measures, and lead complex, high-impact workstreams focused on improving customer experience, strengthening policy and risk effectiveness, reducing transaction losses, and delivering top- and bottom-line results for eBay.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with senior leaders across Trust, Risk, Product Management, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design to integrate insights into business strategies, prioritize investments, and drive decisions across organizational boundaries.

To be successful in this role:

  • Educational Background & Experience: BA/BS degree with 5-7 years (or Masters/PhD with 3+ years) of relevant experience across at least two areas such as Quantitative Research, Analytics, or Data Science.

  • Data Analysis Expertise: Strong ability to identify trends, patterns, and implications within complex data, develop analytical frameworks, and translate findings into strategic and operational decisions.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming (Python/R) and data querying (SQL).

  • Problem-Solving: Strong creativity and structured thinking in solving complex, ambiguous, and cross-functional problems.

  • Execution & Results: Proven ability to independently lead complex analytical initiatives and deliver measurable results in challenging situations.

  • Customer & Business Advocacy: Experience balancing customer experience, risk, and business outcomes, while synthesizing diverse perspectives and driving alignment across stakeholders.

  • Communication with Leaders: Ability to translate complex analyses into clear, actionable recommendations and effectively influence senior-level executives.

  • Availability: Flexible and capable of working remotely across multiple time zones. Regular availability is required for meetings between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM (PDT).

Additionally, the following background and experience is helpful:

  • Prior experience in marketplace Trust, Risk, fraud, or transaction risk analytics.

  • Experience developing quantitative or measurement frameworks for areas such as loss, decision quality, false positives, risk exposure, or return on investment.

  • Ability to present complex analyses and insights effectively in simple terms.

  • Experience in a leading technology company.

  • Background in e-commerce products, marketplaces, payments, or shipping.

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing or LLM/GenAI is a plus.
