Summary

Database Engineer at a software factory in Lisbon, focused on designing scalable relational schemas and tuning Microsoft SQL Server at the engine level. Day to day you optimize queries, indexing, and high-load transactional systems, and support data layers for legacy .NET Framework and modern .NET Core apps across on-prem, cloud, and Linux environments.

We are looking for a Database Engineer to join a Software Factory team, with a strong focus on database architecture, performance optimization, and engine-level tuning.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the scalability, reliability, and performance of the data layer across multiple environments. You will support both legacy applications (.NET Framework) and modernized systems (.NET Core), working closely with Development and DevOps teams to optimize and evolve database solutions that are critical to the business.


Responsibilities

Database Architecture & Design

  • Design and evolve relational database schemas aligned with scalable SaaS architectures.

  • Ensure data models support performance, maintainability, and long-term scalability.

  • Contribute to architectural decisions related to the data layer.

Performance Optimization & Tuning

  • Optimize complex SQL queries and analyze execution plans to improve performance.

  • Define and continuously improve indexing strategies.

  • Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks, including locking, blocking, and concurrency issues.

  • Monitor and tune high-load transactional systems to ensure optimal performance.

Data Operations & Reliability

  • Support database environments across on-premises, cloud, and Linux-based systems.

  • Contribute to backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.

  • Ensure data integrity and reliability across systems.

  • Participate in database deployments and changes as part of CI/CD pipelines.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work closely with development and DevOps teams to analyze and improve database performance.

  • Support production environments, troubleshooting issues and ensuring system stability.

  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve database performance, scalability, and operational efficiency.


Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including engine-level knowledge.

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, with a strong focus on performance optimization.

  • Deep understanding of indexing strategies and execution plans.

  • Proven experience diagnosing and resolving performance issues in production environments.

  • Strong knowledge of transactions, concurrency, and isolation levels.

  • Experience working with large datasets and high-load systems.

  • Familiarity with databases running on Linux environments.

  • Experience collaborating with development and DevOps teams in modern delivery environments.


Nice-to-have

  • Experience supporting both legacy (.NET Framework) and modern (.NET Core) applications.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms.

  • Exposure to automation and database deployment pipelines.

  • Knowledge of distributed systems and scalable architectures.
