Database Engineer

Salary: £45,000 - 73,000 per year

• We are looking for proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and SQL infrastructure, including Azure SQL Server.
• We prefer AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals and DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals.
• We require experience with SQL AG, clustering and high availability features.
• We require SQL and PowerShell scripting experience.
• We require SQL and server performance tuning experience.
• We require SQL replication performance and monitoring tuning experience.
• We require an understanding of Linux server management.
• We value experience with programming languages including PowerShell, SQL and Linux.
• We value knowledge of DevOps, GitHub and other collaboration tool sets.
• We value the ability to work independently and strong communication skills.
• We value the ability to document, share learnings and multi-task, including supporting team upskilling.

• We support key databases for applications used by A&O Shearman, including finance, customer relationship management, business intake and time capture systems.
• We support other business-critical applications, including file transfer, legal technology and various application services.
• We work with third parties who provide expertise in these systems.
• We support the firms database infrastructure, including MS-SQL.
• We support the Dynamics365 platform and applications built on it.
• We package, configure, test and deploy applications to the firm.
• We work with other service support teams in I&O, including End-User Compute, Infrastructure and Networks.
• We work with our global service desk, regional support teams and the global IT department.
• We provide technical database expertise on projects when required.
• We ensure availability, scalability and performance of all application database systems through data metrics.
• We capture and analyse database metrics and identify improvements to database systems.
• We design and implement robust monitoring alerts to identify potential issues early.
• We maintain core database infrastructure servers in Azure, AVS and on-premises.
• We develop backup and restore procedures for major databases to ensure data integrity.
• We develop and leverage automation procedures to turn repeatable actions into automated processes.
• We analyse database capacity metrics on all server infrastructure.
• We provide expertise for database engineering to optimise database migrations, queries and performance.
• We manage and monitor SQL availability groups and clustered SQL servers.
• We lead database-related projects and ensure timely delivery.
• We analyse and use data to identify and prioritise operations and find root causes of major issues.
• We participate in on-call and out-of-hours support for both applications and databases.
• We support maintenance reviews and vulnerability assessments of MS SQL.
• We collaborate with other engineering teams on production changes, incidents and problem management.
