Database Engineer
Description
Role name: Database Engineer
Experience: 6-10 Years
Job Type: Contractual
Project Duration: 6+ Month
Shift Timing: General Shift
Notice Period: Immediate 15 Days
Location: Hyderabad
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Develop, review, and maintain production-quality SQL and database objects for PostgreSQL, including complex joins, CTEs, window functions, DISTINCT ON patterns, conditional aggregation, and date-effective data selection.
- Tune queries used by Composite Services API workflows, including cash balance, assets under management (AUM), account indicators, holdings, maturities, group/party search, and transaction-related reads.
- Diagnose slow queries using EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) in approved non-production or controlled environments; interpret actual-versus-estimated rows, loops, buffer hits/reads, execution time, sort/hash behavior, and I/O waits.
- Identify and address performance issues caused by large intermediate result sets, repeated nested-loop lookups, inaccurate cardinality estimates, expensive aggregation, sort operations, and pagination applied after full aggregation.
- Design and validate indexes, including composite, partial, and expression indexes where appropriate; evaluate selectivity, column order, write overhead, and index maintenance costs before recommending changes.
- Improve pagination, filtering, ordering, and count-query patterns while maintaining correct totals, stable ordering, and API contract behavior. Assess keyset/cursor pagination where product behavior permits.
- Review data access patterns involving account, party, advisor, branch, balance, position, price, and FX relationships; validate join keys, effective-date rules, de-duplication, and missing-price or fallback logic.
- Analyze PostgreSQL runtime behavior including CPU versus I/O waits, temporary-file activity, sort/hash spills, locks, connection-pool pressure, statement timeouts, and read-replica lag.
- Collaborate with Java/Spring service engineers, DBAs, QA, and platform teams to trace API latency to SQL, reproduce issues with representative data volumes, and deliver measurable improvements.
- Create repeatable query-performance tests and document baseline plans, representative parameters, expected row counts, risks, and before/after results. Include performance checks in code review and release validation.
- Support production incidents through evidence-based diagnosis and follow established change, access-control, rollback, and data-protection procedures.
- Communicate findings clearly to technical and business stakeholders; explain trade-offs among latency, resource consumption, data freshness, and consistency.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
- 68 years of hands-on SQL development, with substantial experience building and tuning PostgreSQL workloads in a production environment.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL query planning and execution, including EXPLAIN/EXPLAIN ANALYZE, buffers, join strategies, statistics, indexes, CTE behavior, aggregation, sorting, and parallel query considerations.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze high-row-count workloads and distinguish database execution time from connection acquisition, application processing, serialization, and network latency.
- Experience diagnosing major estimate-versus-actual row-count gaps and understanding how statistics and data distribution can influence plan selection.
- Practical experience tuning queries with joins and aggregation across large business datasets; ability to preserve correctness while reducing scanned rows, repeated lookups, and unnecessary intermediate results.
- Understanding of PostgreSQL transactions, isolation levels, read-only sessions, statement and lock timeouts, connection pooling, and safe cancellation behavior.
- Experience with Git-based source control, peer review, testing, and controlled release practices.
- Strong analytical, communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills; able to take ownership of an issue from evidence gathering through validation.
- Strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills; strong communication skills
- Experience using code management tools, for example GIT or BitBucket
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to show flexibility and reach compromise where appropriate
- Willingness to take ownership for assigned aspects of the project
- Ability to innovate and iterate, willingness to experiment quickly
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work constructively in a shared team environment
- Good Communication skills.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL or PostgreSQL managed on AWS, including reader/writer endpoints, connection routing, replica lag, and failover considerations.
- Experience with performance observability tools such as pg_stat_statements, database load/wait dashboards, CloudWatch, or application tracing/APM.
- Experience with financial-services or wealth-management data, including accounts, parties, advisor/branch hierarchies, positions, balances, pricing, and FX conversion.
- Experience collaborating with Java/Spring services and understanding how datasource configuration, connection pools, request deadlines, and concurrent API traffic affect database load.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated SQL checks, and database change-management practices.
