DBA (Aurora PostgreSQL)

Project overview

The project focuses on migrating a database environment from Azure SQL to Aurora PostgreSQL for a major investment management client. You will design and implement the transformation of system-versioned tables into a PostgreSQL-based history pattern, define schema standards, support bulk data migration and validation, and help establish secure and scalable database operations in AWS.

In addition to migration activities, you will be responsible for performance tuning, automation, access control, encryption, and supporting the data pipeline to Snowflake.

Position overview

We are looking for an experienced DBA with strong PostgreSQL expertise to own the database layer of a large-scale migration project for a major investment management client. In this role, you will support both the migration from Azure SQL to Aurora PostgreSQL and the ongoing database operations, ensuring performance, security, and reliability across the platform.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support the migration from Azure SQL to Aurora PostgreSQL

  • Transform Azure SQL system-versioned tables into a PostgreSQL trigger-based history table pattern using PL/pgSQL

  • Map legacy columns and execute bulk data loads into history tables

  • Validate data integrity after migration

  • Design normalized Aurora PostgreSQL schemas with UUID v7 surrogate primary keys

  • Define foreign key and index naming conventions, audit columns, and soft-delete patterns

  • Author and maintain schema changes as Flyway migration scripts

  • Configure and maintain AWS RDS IAM database authentication with passwordless access patterns

  • Implement KMS at-rest encryption and TLS in-transit enforcement

  • Define least-privilege database role separation for write and read access

  • Perform performance tuning, query analysis, index strategy optimization, autovacuum tuning, and connection pool sizing

  • Implement scheduled maintenance and retention jobs using pg_cron

  • Support the data pipeline to Snowflake, including WAL-based CDC or scheduled exports

  • Collaborate with engineering and data teams to ensure database reliability, scalability, and security

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience working with PostgreSQL

  • Strong hands-on experience with Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS RDS

  • Experience with Flyway and schema migration management

  • Solid knowledge of AWS RDS IAM authentication and KMS

  • Strong PL/pgSQL skills

  • Experience with pg_cron

  • Experience migrating databases from Azure SQL or SQL Server to PostgreSQL

  • Good understanding of PostgreSQL schema design, indexing, and performance tuning

  • Experience with security best practices for cloud databases

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to work closely with engineering and data teams on a migration project

Nice to have

  • Experience with Snowflake

  • Experience with time-partitioned history table patterns

  • Knowledge of WAL-based CDC or scheduled export mechanisms

  • Familiarity with HikariCP and connection pool optimization

  • Experience with investment management or financial services projects
