In aspects related to watch-keeping responsibilities, the Deck Cadet directly subordinates to the OOW; while for issues pertained to other specific responsibilities is also subordinate to the Chief Officer.
In performing watch-keeping duties the Deck Cadet should be familiar with the voyage plan and the Captain’s standing and specific orders. In cooperation with the OOW the Deck Cadet shall ensure that due consideration is given to all safety, security and environmental regulations. Any incidents or significant events must be reported immediately and action should be taken as the situation dictates. He / she shall be familiar with SMS G200 Navigation Standard manual.
The Cadet must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
The Deck Cadet will be assigned duties, besides the watch-keeping duties. These duties will be supervised and monitored by the OOW or the Sr. Bosun / Bosun. The Deck Cadet will assist with maintaining records, the condition and operational status of any equipment or component associated within his area of work.
He / she must ensure that any subordinates assigned to them are given the necessary instruction for the proper performance in their duties.
Distribution of duties will be subject to individual evaluation and they may be temporary or permanent, within a service term, specific vessel or itinerary. In any case, the Captain or the Staff Captain must ensure that this issue is clearly communicated and that the specific expectations are explained to the individual officers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with maintaining records, the condition and operational status of any equipment or component associated within his area of work.
- Ensure that any subordinates assigned to them are given the necessary instruction for the proper performance in their duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
- Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
Deck Maintenance
Just as important as the Bridge duties, the Cadet will allocate approximately 50% of his / her time working for the Sr. Bosun / Bosun learning all aspects of Deck maintenance and mooring operations.
Examples of deck maintenance work:
- Clean, rust scaling and paint of the vessel’s Hull, Decks, equipment, Masts and superstructure.
- Paint of the interior including enclosed spaces.
- Clean, rust scaling and paint of the ships tanks and stores.
- Work on the mooring decks during arrivals and departures.
- Anchor watches.
- Stand gangway watches when in port and at anchor if required.
- Tender crew duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Navigation
- Assists the Navigation Officer in ensuring that the ship carries adequate and up to date charts, and the appropriate nautical publications.
- Assists in the preparation of the vessel’s passage plan, voyage report, daily position reports and the pilot’s info sheet.
- Ensure that the flag inventory and the maintenance of the bridge emergency signals and communications. (Pyrotechnics, GMDSS portable radios, EPIRB, SART) is in compliance. Any deficiencies must be reported to his / her direct Supervisor.
Lifesaving
- Assists in the supervision, maintenance and repair of all lifesaving appliances. (Survival crafts, rescue boats, launching appliances, pilot ladders).
- Ensure that they conform to the applicable laws and regulations of SOLAS, Class Authorities, U.S. Coast Guard and Flag State.
Safety Training
- Assist the Safety Officer, Security Officer and other Deck officers, in the training of crew, to ensure that the entire crew is familiar with their duties in the Safety Organization. The training shall be organized in a monthly schedule prepared by the Safety Officer and approved by the Master and Staff Captain. The crew training in the handling of the lifeboats, for certification purposes should be primarily the responsibility of the Nautical Officers, and secondarily of the Safety Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Intermediate to Advanced level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.
- The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.
EDUCATION
- High school diploma or foreign equivalency is required.
- Courses and or training in safety/environmental regulations and procedures from a recognized educational establishment are required.
