Deputy AML Manager - Belgium
Ready to Get Shit Done?
At bunq, we're more than just a bank, we're transforming how people experience banking across Europe. Our users deserve to bank like locals, no matter where they are. We started Belgium with local IBANs, but we're now upgrading to full-branch status, which means taking on direct regulatory standing, deeper compliance obligations, and new accountability to Belgium's NBB (National Bank of Belgium) and financial regulators.
As AML Manager Belgium, your mission is to lead Belgium through this compliance transition, ensuring we move seamlessly from our lighter vIBAN model to full-branch operations while maintaining regulatory trust and operational excellence. You'll be the accountable person who owns Belgium's entire compliance footprint, AML/CFT operational readiness, integrity-risk assessment (SIRA), and financial-crime reporting (FIU), all operating at full-branch regulatory standards.
Take Ownership
As AML Belgium, you'll own:
Transition Belgium to full-branch compliance model, migrate from vIBAN-era compliance systems to full-branch operations, ensuring seamless readiness for NBB oversight and maintaining zero regulatory findings during the upgrade.
Own Belgium's SIRA, AML/CFT, and FIU obligations end-to-end, establish Belgium-localized SIRA integrity-risk assessments, AML/CFT gap analysis, and FIU financial-crime reporting, using AI-first mechanisms to deliver what traditional banks staff with a local team.
Prepare Belgium's AML program for regulatory inspection readiness, maintain audit trails, evidence documentation, and control testing for NBB oversight.
What You'll Work on Right Away
Full-Branch Compliance Readiness Audit : Conduct a comprehensive audit of Belgium's current compliance posture under vIBAN model, identify gaps for full-branch requirements (NBB, FSMA, Ombudsfin), and deliver a remediation roadmap with specific AI-driven solutions.
Belgium-Localized SIRA & FIU Systems : Design and implement Belgium-specific SIRA integrity-risk controls and FIU financial-crime reporting mechanisms, using AI tooling to automate what possible and keeping humans in the loop for judgment calls and escalations.
Do You Have What It Takes?
Deep Belgian AML/CFT & regulatory expertise - You understand NBB requirements, FSMA rules, local banking regulations, and their practical application; you can translate Belgian regulatory language into operational compliance controls.
Proven ownership of compliance programs end-to-end - You've built or scaled a compliance program (not just supported one), managing operational readiness, risk assessment, and regulatory reporting as the accountable person.
Proven ability to manage AML inspections and regulatory audits, preparing evidence, audit trails, and control documentation for regulator scrutiny.
AI-first operating mindset - You're comfortable building compliance operations using AI and automation (not traditional local headcount), and you can design mechanisms that let AI handle routine workflows while you focus on exceptions and regulatory judgment.
Fluency in Dutch, French, or both + English - You can navigate Belgian regulatory communication and engage with local stakeholders in their language; English fluency for bunq-wide collaboration.
