Deputy Construction Manager

Position Summary

The Deputy Construction Manager supports the Senior Manager of Construction Services in planning, coordinating, and executing industrial construction projects while ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with company quality standards. This role provides day-to-day leadership to field operations and subcontractor activities and serves as the Senior Manager's representative when delegated.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution

  • Assist in planning and managing all phases of industrial construction projects.
  • Coordinate daily field operations to ensure efficient workflow and productivity.
  • Monitor project schedules and identify opportunities to improve performance with the field operations team.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with project specifications, drawings, and contract requirements.
  • Assist in developing recovery plans for schedule or productivity issues.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Provide leadership and direction to field supervisors, foremen, and craft personnel.
  • Support workforce planning, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Mentor and develop emerging leaders.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Safety

  • Promote and enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Participate in incident investigations.
  • Lead by example in maintaining a zero-incident safety culture.

Quality Control

  • Ensure construction activities meet quality standards and project specifications.
  • Coordinate inspections and testing activities working with the Field Service Quality Control Manager.
  • Resolve field quality issues in collaboration with engineering and quality personnel.
  • Support the execution team by ensuring the needed drawings are uploaded into CrewConx.

Schedule & Cost Control

  • Work with the Field Service Operations team to ensure the Field Service Supervisor Schedule is accurate and up to date.
  • Assist with forecasting labor requirements.
  • Identify potential roadblocks and recommend corrective actions.

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Maintain positive working relationships with owners, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate project status effectively.
  • Assist in resolving field issues promptly to minimize project delays.

Documentation

  • Review daily reports, field documentation, and progress records.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate project documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures and contractual reporting requirements.

Qualifications

Education

  • a 4-year degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant industrial construction experience will be considered.

Experience

  • 2-4 years of progressively responsible experience in industrial construction.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role, preferably leading large teams.
  • Experience with heavy industrial projects such as pulp & paper, steel mills, power generation, chemical plants, mining, or large-scale infrastructure preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of industrial construction methods and sequencing.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry safety practices.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction management software.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Frequent walking on active construction sites.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Reporting Relationship

Reports to: Senior Manager of Construction Services

As Delegated Supervises: Field Superintendents, Foremen, Craft Personnel, and assigned subcontractors

Travel: As needed to develop staff, maintain relationships, and manage complex issues in person. Expect an average travel of up to 25%, with some months having no travel and others having 1 to 2 weeks.
