Royal Voluntary Service has an opportunity available for a Deputy Manager to join our team at Roseberry Park Hospital, Marton Road, Middlesbrough, TS4 3AF. You will join us on a part-time, permanent basis, and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £13.22 per hour (FTE £24,070 per annum).
About the Deputy Manager role:
Royal Voluntary Service hospital cafes, shops and trolleys are part of the NHS and a real asset in their own right. Working alongside a friendly team of employees and volunteers, you will participate in the day-to-day running of our busy retail sites at Roseberry Park Hospital.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Support the Retail Manager with the day-to-day running of the shop/café at Roseberry Park Hospital.
- Help ensure operational excellence and consistently high standards across the service.
- Support the leadership, supervision and development of the retail team and volunteers.
- Help the team deliver excellent customer service to patients, visitors, staff and customers.
- Maintain high standards of presentation, cleanliness, stock availability and merchandising.
- Support the Retail Manager to drive sales and profitability through effective retail operations.
- Identify and maximise sales opportunities within the shop/café.
- Assist with ensuring the service operates in line with RVS policies, procedures, mission and values.
- Help create a welcoming and positive environment for customers and colleagues.
- Support the Retail Manager with the smooth and efficient running of the service in their absence.
Hours: 14 hours per week (Monday - Friday)
Our retail sites are open on weekends and bank holidays.
There may also be opportunities for paid overtime in busy periods or to cover absence.
What you'll bring as our Deputy Manager:
As Deputy Manager, you’ll work alongside the Retail Manager to support the smooth day-to-day running of the shop/café at Roseberry Park Hospital. You’ll help lead and support the team to deliver excellent customer service, maintain high standards and create a welcoming environment, while also supporting sales, stock management and the overall commercial performance of the service.
Responsibilities
This is what you'll be doing:
- Support the Retail Manager to deliver key performance targets, sales budgets and effective cost control.
- Help ensure the shop/café maintains excellent standards, with a strong focus on friendly, efficient and welcoming customer service.
- Ensure the service operates in line with Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Data Protection, Stock Control and other relevant policies and procedures.
- Support and communicate with employees and volunteers, addressing any issues and providing guidance where needed.
- Provide coaching, mentoring and training to help the team develop and deliver operational excellence.
- Help plan and coordinate employee and volunteer resources to meet the needs of the shop/café.
This is how you'll be doing it:
Decision-making
Is able to deal with day-to-day operational decisions across all areas of responsibility, working within set parameters of policies and procedures. Is able to make confident decisions whilst understanding escalation routes when required. Empowering the team to make routine decisions.
Analysis and initiative
Ability to understand and interpret data and utilise, for application on a day-to-day basis.
Ensure compliance with legislation, and protection of the health, safety and well being of all employees.
Planning and delivery
Planning: Information cascades, setting tasks and monitoring outcomes. Short term planning and routine processes. Physical: Rotas and resource planning. Financial: Facilitate stock management process. Particular emphasis on accurate receipt of delivery and replenishment.
Working relationships
You’ll build positive and effective relationships with volunteers and staff through regular, two-way communication, exchanging information and providing direction both formally and informally. You’ll work closely with the Retail Manager as part of the management team, seeking advice and supporting your own development. You’ll also work with Head Office to access specialist advice, support and learning. You’ll also support the Retail Manager with the implementation of the employee and volunteer journey within the site.
Supporting and enabling others
You’ll support employees throughout their journey, from recruitment and induction through to training, performance management and exit. You’ll use relevant training and development tools to support the team and encourage a positive and collaborative working environment.You’ll also support volunteers throughout their volunteer journey, helping them to feel capable, safe and confident in their roles.
Knowledge and expertise
You’ll have experience at supervisory level within a similar retail environment, together with knowledge of EPOS systems and general administrative processes. You’ll have excellent customer service skills, be confident using standard IT systems and have good literacy and numeracy skills.

- Strong customer service skills, with a friendly, helpful and professional approach.
- Experience of supporting or supervising a team, including employees and volunteers.
- Ability to coach, mentor and motivate others to deliver high standards.
- Good understanding of sales, budgets and cost control, with a commercial mindset.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan resources and prioritise workloads.
- Good understanding of health and safety, food hygiene, stock control and relevant policies and procedures.
- Confident using systems, management information and reports to support day-to-day operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to deal with issues as they arise
- Ability to take responsibility and lead the service in the absence of the Retail Manager.
