Design Automation Developer
Summary
Builds and maintains parametric SolidWorks models, standard parts, and CAD standards for a custom steel fabrication and HVAC manufacturer, using design tables, macros, the SolidWorks API, and DriveWorks to automate repetitive design work and speed up the engineering team.
Job Summary
The Design Automation Developer builds and maintains the parametric SolidWorks models, standard parts, and design tools the engineering team relies on. The role speeds up design and detailing by automating repetitive work, tests standard parts, workflows, and new software before they are deployed to the team, and owns the CAD standards that keep designs consistent, accurate, and manufacturable.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain parametric SolidWorks models, configurations, and design tables that designers can use to quickly produce accurate models and drawings.
- Build design automation tools (e.g., design tables, equations, macros, SolidWorks API, DriveWorks) to reduce repetitive modeling and detailing work and shorten design cycle time.
- Create, test, and validate standard parts, assemblies, and libraries before releasing them to the design team.
- Establish, document, and maintain CAD standards, including part and drawing templates, naming conventions, custom properties, and BOM settings.
- Test new and revised design workflows, and document best practices and work instructions for the team.
- Evaluate, pilot, and test new software, add-ins, and SolidWorks releases before deployment, and recommend adoption.
- Train and support designers and detailers on automated models, standard parts, tools, and workflows.
- Collaborate with engineering, detailing, and manufacturing teams to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for automation.
- Troubleshoot issues with models, templates, and automation tools, and manage revisions and change requests for released content.
- Ensure automated models and standard parts produce manufacturable designs that comply with industry standards, codes, and company requirements.
- Stay current on SolidWorks enhancements and design automation best practices, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, including parametric modeling, configurations, design tables, equations, and sheet metal.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM and design automation tools such as DriveWorks, the SolidWorks API (VBA/C#), or macros preferred.
- Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication, GD&T, and drafting standards.
- Analytical, detail-oriented approach to testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to write clear documentation and train others.
- Professional certification in SolidWorks (CSWP or higher) preferred.
- Experience working in industries such as HVAC, automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing.
- Familiarity with other 3D modeling software and analysis tools, such as AutoCAD, CATIA, Revit, or ANSYS.
