Design Engineer - Plastics
Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Plastic Design Engineer to join our 2-Wheeler Electric Vehicle R&D team. You will design, develop, and optimize plastic components like body panels, trims, and battery enclosures. Your role focuses on balancing structural integrity, weight reduction, aesthetics, and manufacturing feasibility.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design: Create 3D models and 2D engineering drawings for 2W plastic components.
DFM/DFA: Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles for injection moulding.
Material Selection: Choose appropriate engineering plastics based on thermal, mechanical, and UV requirements.
CAE Collaboration: Work with CAE/VI/Proto teams to review DFS, FEA, and vibration analysis results.
Supplier Alignment: Coordinate with toolmakers to review Mold designs and resolve tooling issues.
Testing & Validation: Define testing criteria and support physical validation of plastic parts.
Design and Development: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative
mechanical designs for new products or improve existing ones. Use
NX / teamcenter software tools to create detailed 2D and 3D models, assembly
drawings, DFM, DFMEA, DFA, DFS and technical specifications. Upfront
involvement with supplier for part manufacturing and quality achievement.
Perform GDNT and layout integration for mechanical electronics design and
development.
Conceptualization:
Generate concepts and perform feasibility studies to evaluate the viability of
new product ideas or design modifications for Proprietary design. Conduct
research and analysis to identify the best materials (Polymers), components,
and manufacturing processes to achieve desired performance, cost, regulatory
and quality targets.
Engineering Analysis: Support engineering calculations, simulations, and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess mechanical system performance, structural integrity,
and thermal characteristics. Identify and resolve design issues, ensuring
compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Prototyping and Testing: Create prototypes or coordinate with prototype manufacturing teams to
build physical models for evaluation and testing. Conduct tests and
measurements to verify design performance, identify areas for improvement, and
make necessary design iterations.
Documentation and Reporting: Prepare comprehensive engineering documentation, including design
specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and technical
reports. Maintain accurate records of design changes, test results, and project
milestones.
Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical
engineers, manufacturing engineers, and project managers, to ensure effective
integration of mechanical designs into larger systems. Communicate design
concepts, ideas, and technical information clearly and effectively to
stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement: Stay updated and benchmark with the latest
industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to mechanical design.
Seek opportunities to enhance design processes, tools, and methodologies to
drive efficiency, productivity, and innovation
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Automotive, or Plastics Engineering.
Experience: 2 to 4 years of core plastic product design experience, preferably in automotive or 2W OEMs.
CAD Software: Advanced proficiency in Siemens NX & Teamcenter.
Tooling Insight: Basic knowledge of injection Mold construction, lifters, sliders, and gate locations.
GD&T: Practical experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME standards.
