Discussion

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Design Engineer (Senior) based in the United States.

This is a senior-level opportunity to shape the next generation of a sophisticated maritime data and AI platform.
You’ll design and build complex, data-rich product experiences from early concepts through production.
The role sits at the intersection of product design and frontend engineering, with significant technical ownership.
You’ll help define design patterns, improve user workflows, and establish high standards for accessibility and performance.
Working within a small, highly collaborative team, you’ll have direct access to leadership and meaningful influence over technical direction.
Your work will support mission-critical users operating in demanding environments where reliability and clarity matter.
This remote-first position offers substantial autonomy and the opportunity to help shape how design engineering evolves as the organization grows.

Accountabilities

  • Design and implement complex, data-rich product interfaces, taking concepts from initial sketches through production-ready experiences.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing features, workflows, usability, visual quality, and smaller interface issues or “paper cuts.”
  • Participate in product kickoffs, develop a strong understanding of users and business objectives, and proactively contribute to product specifications and design direction.
  • Balance visual quality with accessibility, performance, responsiveness, maintainability, and technical feasibility.
  • Champion WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards and strong performance practices across the products you own.
  • Establish and maintain high-quality design and frontend patterns through design audits, code reviews, and design engineering reviews.
  • Mentor designers and frontend engineers, share best practices, and help raise the technical and visual quality of the broader team.
  • Contribute to the evolution and scalability of design engineering practices, systems, and workflows.
  • Collaborate across product, engineering, and other functions to deliver cohesive and effective user experiences.
  • Take ownership of ambiguous, technically demanding problems and adapt priorities as mission and product needs evolve.
  • Requirements

    • Typically 7+ years of experience in design engineering, frontend design, product design, or a closely related field, including experience operating as a senior individual contributor on a high-performing team.
    • Deep understanding of modern design workflows and the technical constraints involved in translating design concepts into production interfaces.
    • Expert-level knowledge of Tailwind CSS and strong command of modern CSS fundamentals, including container queries, cascade, specificity, OKLCH, view transitions, Flexbox, Grid, and responsive layouts.
    • Strong understanding of accessibility standards, particularly WCAG 2.2, as well as web performance metrics and optimization practices such as Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse.
    • Professional experience with modern frontend technologies including React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
    • Demonstrated ability to design, build, and evolve design systems or component libraries that are used across teams, with knowledge of component API design, token architecture, and accessible primitives.
    • Strong Product/UI Design foundation with excellent visual judgment across layout, color, typography, hierarchy, spacing, animation, and interaction details.
    • Advanced Figma proficiency, including variables, modes, auto layout, and component architectures that translate effectively into code.
    • Experience designing data-dense interfaces such as tables, dashboards, charts, and real-time data displays.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical decisions, design rationale, constraints, and trade-offs.
    • Strong mentoring and collaboration skills, with a willingness to give and receive constructive feedback.
    • Comfortable working independently in ambiguous environments, adapting to shifting priorities while maintaining quality and composure.
    • Low-ego, team-oriented mindset with a genuine commitment to improving both the work and the people around you.
    • Experience with geospatial or mapping technologies such as Mapbox, MapLibre, deck.gl, or Cesium is a plus.
    • Experience working in regulated, secure, or highly controlled environments such as defense, finance, or healthcare is a plus.
    • Benefits

      • Competitive compensation tailored to experience, location, and role impact, with applicable salary ranges provided during the hiring process.
      • Unlimited paid time off (PTO) to support flexibility and work-life balance.
      • Dedicated sick time.
      • Medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
      • 11 paid holidays annually.

      • Referral bonuses.
      • Performance bonuses.
      • Remote-first work environment with flexible or hybrid arrangements where applicable.
      • Direct access to leadership within a flat organizational structure.
      • High degree of autonomy and ownership over projects and technical direction.
      • Opportunity to contribute to mission-driven work with tangible real-world impact.
