Corgi Labs is a YC-backed (W23) payments intelligence company. We use machine learning to help online businesses increase approval rates, reduce fraud, and recover lost revenue through AI-driven decisioning. We build on payment providers like Stripe and serve global merchants.
The Product
Corgi's merchant-facing risk product has two halves. Corgi Model makes the fraud decision at checkout, through an integration that leaves the merchant's own checkout experience untouched. Corgi Intelligence is the dashboard where merchants see and act on those decisions, and it is the surface this role designs. Intelligence is where a business reviews the payments the model was unsure about and decides whether to accept or reject them, tracks fraud and dispute losses, sets and tests its own risk rules, and reads model-generated insights on customer and product patterns. The Role
The Design Lead owns the product experience for Corgi Intelligence end to end, including how merchants understand and act on the decisions Corgi Model makes. When our models decline a transaction, flag a customer, or score a payment as risky, the merchant needs to know why, and be able to challenge it, override it, and trust it. That interface is the product.
This is a payments role as much as a design role. You'll be reasoning about decline codes, chargeback deadlines, VAMP thresholds, and 3DS flows, and about how model confidence and precision/recall tradeoffs translate into what a merchant sees on screen and what it costs their business. Few designers come in knowing this; learning it is part of the job, and we'll teach it.
Corgi's merchants range from solo operators to enterprise platforms, and the same decision surface has to work for both. Get it wrong in one direction and legitimate customers get blocked; wrong in the other and fraud gets through. The design work is giving a merchant enough to make that call quickly and correctly.
Responsibilities
Own product and UX design across Corgi's merchant-facing surfaces, from problem definition through launch and iteration
Translate complex systems, policies, and operational constraints into clear, thoughtful product experiences
Design model explainability interfaces so non-technical merchants understand why a decision was made, and can contest it
Design fraud decisioning experiences — how a risk score, decline reason, or flag is surfaced, explained, and acted on
Design human-in-the-loop review tooling for manual fraud queues, balancing false-positive cost against fraud loss
Design onboarding, dispute, and compliance flows that meet PSP and regulatory obligations without destroying conversion
Partner with data science to translate model confidence and thresholds into interface decisions merchants can reason about
Identify high-leverage opportunities that improve coherence across journeys, touchpoints, and surfaces
Design, prototype, and communicate ideas with creative storytelling and demos
Use qualitative and quantitative signals to inform decisions and evaluate impact
Work closely with engineering to ensure a high bar for craft and implementation quality
Build and maintain the design system for risk-native interfaces
Maintain brand and design consistency across surfaces, in partnership with our marketing contractor
Minimum requirements
8+ years of design experience spanning UX, digital, and brand, with demonstrated ability to own end-to-end scope
A portfolio demonstrating strong visual craft, interaction design, and systems thinking
Track record building design systems and shipping in close collaboration with engineering
Experience working across complex problems with multiple stakeholders, constraints, and interconnected workflows
Strong product thinking and the ability to shape direction, not just execute against requirements
Evidence of learning complex new domains quickly and operating effectively with ambiguity
Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to influence through clear design rationale and artifacts
Comfort in fast-moving environments where priorities shift in response to policy, operational, or regulatory needs
Preferred qualifications
Exposure to fintech, payments, risk, or another regulated product domain
Experience designing interfaces that surface model outputs, scores, or automated decisions
Front-end fluency sufficient to prototype and collaborate closely with engineering
Experience designing for technical and non-technical users within the same product
