Designer I, Distribution Design
Position Summary
The Distribution Designer I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the design and development of electric distribution projects. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers and designers, this position assists in producing construction-ready designs for overhead and underground systems in a fast-paced, standards-driven environment.
This role is ideal for individuals looking to build foundational knowledge in utility distribution design, develop technical skills, and gain exposure to real-world infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems (typically 4kV–35kV)
- Support preparation of construction work packages, including staking sheets, bills of material, and design drawings
- Utilize design and mapping tools (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar platforms) to develop and update system designs
- Interpret and apply client standards, engineering guidelines, and basic NESC requirements
- Perform basic calculations, including load estimates and material quantities
- Conduct field visits to collect data, verify existing conditions, and support design validation
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and field personnel to ensure accurate and constructible designs
- Assist with permitting documentation, easement exhibits, and right-of-way coordination
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation in client systems
- Identify and escalate design issues or discrepancies to senior team members
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 0–2 years of experience in utility design, construction, or a related field
- Basic understanding of electric distribution systems or willingness to learn
- Familiarity with CAD or GIS tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar) is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow established standards and processes
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Preferred:
- Internship or prior exposure to utility, construction, or engineering environments
- Knowledge of overhead and underground distribution components
- Exposure to safety standards and utility work practices
Work Environment & Expectations
