We specialize in complex medium- and high-voltage electrical infrastructure projects throughout North America, providing engineering and construction solutions for utility, industrial, and energy infrastructure clients.
Position Summary
Saber Power Services is seeking a Civil Designer to support the design and execution of site development projects for substations, switching stations, synchronous condensers, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and other utility and industrial infrastructure.
This position is responsible for developing site civil designs, construction drawings, and supporting technical documentation, including site layout, grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility systems. The Civil Designer works collaboratively with engineers, project managers, surveyors, and other design disciplines to deliver accurate, coordinated, and constructible designs.
We welcome candidates with varying levels of experience. The position level will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications, technical expertise, and demonstrated experience. More experienced candidates may also serve as technical or project leads, providing guidance to other designers and supporting complex project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare site civil design plans and construction documents using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Develop site layouts, grading plans, drainage and stormwater management systems, utility designs, earthwork calculations, and erosion control plans.
- Produce design drawings, exhibits, and technical documentation.
- Review project requirements, client specifications, applicable codes, and regulatory requirements to support accurate and compliant designs.
- Support permitting activities, including preparation of documentation and coordination with regulatory agencies and authorities having jurisdiction.
- Collaborate with civil, electrical, structural, and other engineering disciplines to ensure coordinated project designs.
- Coordinate with project engineers, project managers, surveyors, and other stakeholders throughout the design process.
- Maintain design quality and support project schedules and deliverable requirements.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and technical coordination activities.
- Depending on experience and project assignments, provide technical guidance, review design work, and mentor less experienced designers and drafters.
- As assigned, support construction activities, including responding to requests for information (RFIs), reviewing submittals, and participating in site visits or assessments.
- As assigned, assist project engineers with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination of design deliverables.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of relevant site civil design experience, including preparation of civil design plans and construction documents.
- Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Hands-on experience with site grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility design, earthwork calculations, and permitting.
- Working knowledge of civil engineering design principles, construction drawings, and applicable design standards.
- Understanding of applicable local, state, and federal regulations related to site civil design and permitting.
- Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams and manage multiple assignments.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Relevant education or technical training in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field is beneficial; equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience designing civil infrastructure for the power industry, including substations, switching stations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), or other utility infrastructure, is strongly preferred.
- Experience with industrial facilities, commercial land development, or other complex site development projects.
- Advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D capabilities, including development of surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, and earthwork quantity calculations.
- Experience with Autodesk Hydraflow Express, Hydraflow Hydrographs, or comparable stormwater drainage design software.
- Experience coordinating permitting requirements with TxDOT and local authorities having jurisdiction.
- Experience supporting construction activities, including RFIs, submittal reviews, and field coordination.
- Experience providing technical guidance, reviewing design deliverables, or leading civil design activities on assigned projects.
