Dev Ops Engineer

About the Role

Are you a DevOps Engineer who loves the intersection of modern cloud-native architecture, reliable systems engineering and is looking to develop your lead skills?

Schoolbox is looking for a permanent DevOps Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the seamless operation, security, and scalability of our cloud-based SaaS platform as we prepare to expand into new global regions.

Reporting directly to the Infrastructure Manager, you will design, implement, and mature our AWS and Cloudflare infrastructure using modern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices. Beyond the technical scope, you will act as a technical expert - mentoring junior team members and lifting the capability of our broader support and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Cloud & Infrastructure Engineering: Design, scale, and secure the Schoolbox Cloud environment. Optimize cloud spend, monitor usage patterns, and mature our architecture to support cost-effective growth and global expansion.
• Automation & CI/CD: Maintain secure configurations using IaC (Terraform, Puppet) and manage robust deployment pipelines via GitHub Actions and Concourse CI.
• Observability & Monitoring: Build, maintain, and monitor metric and log collection using Grafana's stack to ensure high availability and rapid alerting.
• Systems Management & Support: Oversee access controls (AWS, GitHub, Cloudflare), manage timely OS/dependency patching, and build custom packages when required.
• Team Leadership & BAU: Mentor Junior DevOps Engineers, provide reliable escalation for L1/L2 support, and actively participate in the team’s on-call emergency line rotation.

What We Are Looking For

To be successful in this role, you will bring a process-oriented mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and deep experience across the following stack:

• AWS Infrastructure: Strong knowledge of EC2, RDS, Route 53, S3, ECS, Lambda, and Secrets Manager, and expose to VPC networking, IAM, EKS, and DynamoDB.
• Cloudflare Ecosystem: Deep understanding of DNS, R2, Zero Trust, and Applications, alongside knowledge of Workers, WAF, and Tunnels.
• Infrastructure as Code: Proven experience managing infrastructure at scale using Terraform and Puppet (or equivalents).
• CI/CD & Containers: Experience running SaaS release processes via GitHub Actions or Concourse CI, backed by a solid understanding of containerisation.
• Systems & Networking: Solid foundational knowledge of core networking concepts, scripting languages, and mail server administration (e.g., Postfix).
• Security First Approach: An understanding of today's SaaS security landscape, and how to get the most from common cloud security management programs.
