A temporary lab role in forensic science supporting method development, validation, and equipment maintenance using LC-MS/MS and ISO 17025 standards.

An exciting temporary opportunity has arisen for a Development Scientist to join Forensic team based in the Mirfield, West Yorkshire. This is to cover maternity leave initially but could lead to a permanent role for the right person.
Duties:
- Support senior development staff in creating, validating, and implementing new laboratory test methods, including writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and helping train laboratory staff.
- Assist with specialist analytical investigations, troubleshooting, and providing support for the analytical services delivered by the team.
- Communicate complex technical information clearly and accurately, offering analytical advice to colleagues where required.
- Help maintain and troubleshoot laboratory analytical equipment to minimise downtime and ensure efficient operations.
- Support the delivery of analytical development training for laboratory scientists.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development team by supporting the timely validation and implementation of new analytical methods.
- Perform analytical procedures using advanced laboratory equipment, identifying and helping investigate system failures, deviations, QC issues, and other technical problems.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 17025, Lab51 standards, and relevant legislation while promoting laboratory best practices.
- Deliver accurate and timely analytical services, applying technical expertise and professional judgement to complex tasks, while maintaining personal competency and supporting the training of others.
- Help develop, maintain, and improve laboratory documentation, including SOPs, in line with quality standards.
- Assist with routine equipment maintenance, preventative maintenance (PMs), call-outs, and method maintenance.
- Maintain a safe laboratory environment by following COSHH requirements, risk assessments, SOPs, and health and safety procedures.
- Manage, retrieve, and interpret complex client data using laboratory information systems.
- Support and mentor junior laboratory staff while contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Identify emerging technologies and improved ways of working that could enhance laboratory performance and provide a competitive advantage.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Chemistry, Forensic Science or Toxicology Degree
- Good Laboratory Practice
- Knowledge and experience of using LC-MS/MS
- Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of conventional IT software e.g. Microsoft Office
Desirable Skills & Experience
- MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Forensic Science or Toxicology with a focus on analytical chemistry
- 12 months experience in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory
- Knowledge and experience of using Waters LC-MS/MS systems and software
