Devops Engineer

Summary

This DevOps Engineer role involves building backend services with TypeScript and Node.js while managing GCP infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and security governance. The position requires strong experience with Terraform, BigQuery, and cloud observability to support data-driven initiatives.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a DevOps Engineer based in United States.

This role combines backend software engineering with cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and security to support secure and reliable data platforms. You will build TypeScript and Node.js services while owning the GCP infrastructure and delivery systems behind them. The position offers the opportunity to work on data access, platform reliability, governance, and secure technology delivery within a technically sophisticated environment. You will design access controls, manage infrastructure as code, strengthen CI/CD pipelines, and improve observability across production systems. The role also involves close collaboration with scientific and technical stakeholders to enable data-driven discovery initiatives. It is well suited to an engineer who enjoys broad ownership, continuous learning, and solving complex platform challenges.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, build, maintain, and improve backend services using TypeScript and Node.js, ensuring reliable, secure, and well-structured APIs.
  • Implement and manage role-based access control across applications and data layers, supporting secure and governed access to sensitive data.
  • Design and evolve relational database schemas and migrations using Prisma or a comparable ORM, while maintaining strong SQL practices and query performance.
  • Develop and govern BigQuery access patterns at row, dataset, and table levels to support appropriate data access and governance.
  • Build and maintain GCP infrastructure across Cloud Run, Artifact Registry, Cloud SQL, IAM, and VPC Service Controls.
  • Define and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform, supporting repeatable, scalable, and secure cloud environments.
  • Own CI/CD workflows through GitHub Actions, covering automated build, testing, deployment, and release processes.
  • Maintain production security by addressing dependencies and vulnerabilities, managing secrets, and triaging tools such as Dependabot.
  • Containerize applications with Docker and maintain reproducible build and release processes.
  • Implement observability, logging, monitoring, and alerting using Cloud Monitoring and related technologies.
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, incident response, and continuous improvements to platform reliability.
  • Apply AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude within established engineering guardrails to accelerate development while maintaining code quality.
  • Collaborate with engineers, data teams, scientific stakeholders, and other groups to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Work independently across multiple projects and priorities while contributing to a collaborative, distributed engineering team.
  • Requirements:

    • 2–7 years of professional software engineering or platform engineering experience, with strong hands-on backend development experience in TypeScript and Node.js.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
    • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing production-grade role-based access control systems.
    • Strong knowledge of relational database design, SQL, migrations, and Prisma or a comparable ORM.
    • Practical experience with BigQuery, including row-, dataset-, or table-level access patterns.
    • Production experience managing GCP infrastructure, particularly Cloud Run, Artifact Registry, Cloud SQL, and IAM.
    • Strong infrastructure-as-code experience using Terraform or a comparable technology.
    • Experience owning CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions or similar tools across build, testing, and deployment stages.
    • Experience with Docker containerization in production environments.
    • Knowledge of cloud networking, identity, security, dependency management, vulnerability remediation, and secrets management.
    • Experience with observability, logging, and monitoring using Cloud Monitoring or equivalent platforms.
    • Professional experience using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar tools.
    • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals, including asynchronous programming and typed API contracts.
    • Ability to work effectively with Git and modern code review practices.
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently within a distributed team.
    • Availability to work on a U.S. East Coast schedule.
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
    • Preferred qualifications include:

      • Experience with VPC Service Controls or comparable data exfiltration and perimeter security controls.
      • Background in data governance, auditing, or regulated environments.
      • Experience optimizing BigQuery costs and data access patterns.
      • Exposure to scientific data platforms, including biological, chemical, clinical, or related datasets.
      • Experience defining SLOs, alerting strategies, or on-call practices.
      • Experience supporting discovery-focused or research-oriented technology programs.
      • Benefits:

        • Competitive salary and bonus package based on experience.
        • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance.
        • Company-provided Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance.
        • Company-sponsored 401(k) plan.
        • Continuing education benefits.
        • Opportunities for professional development and career advancement.
        • Team-focused and collaborative work environment.
        • 100% remote work arrangement.
        • Work-life balance supported through a distributed team environment.
        • Opportunity to contribute to technically challenging data, cloud, security, and discovery initiatives.
