Director- Corporate Marketing & Communications
Description
The Role
Bennett Family of Companies is a woman-owned transportation and logistics group headquartered in McDonough, GA, with 12 affiliated operating companies. We are hiring a Director of Corporate Marketing & Communications to lead the corporate brand, marketing for our core operating companies, and internal communications across the organization.
The Director reports to the Vice President of Corporate Business Development and Marketing and leads a team of 6–8. You will develop the annual marketing plan with the VP, then own its execution and adjust it through the year. The VP approves strategy, and you are accountable for results. You will work as a peer to our Strategic Director of Field Marketing, who leads marketing for entities not based in the home office.
This role sits at the intersection of marketing and business development. Our marketing exists to win and grow customers, drivers and freight agents and you will be measured on that.
What success looks like in year one
Within 12 months, you will have:
- Delivered an approved annual marketing plan and budget, reviewed quarterly against agreed KPIs.
- Driven the use of HubSpot for email, social and advertising campaigns with reported results on bi-monthly board of director reports.
- Ensured team has delivered Symposium, Motorsports, major trade show events, Driver Appreciation Week, and Truck Show on time and on budget.
- Reported driver recruitment cost per qualified applicant and cost per hire by channel each month, and lowered both against the prior year.
- Kept the corporate brand and your assigned companies' brands consistent, and set master standards that Field Marketing applies too.
- Measured the trade show program on qualified leads and meetings booked, not attendance.
- Built AI into the department's workflows, with measured gains in output volume and turnaround time.
- Set a reliable internal communications schedule that reaches office staff, freight agents and drivers alike.
- Built trusted working relationships with the business unit leaders you support, confirmed by their feedback at your annual review.
- Built a team that hits its deadlines, with clear goals, job titles and documented workflows.
Responsibilities
Strategy and planning
- Develop the annual marketing plan and budget with the VP, aligned with the goals of the company and each business unit.
- Own execution of the approved plan, track performance against KPIs, and recommend changes during the year.
- Run the department with P&L accountability. Track the cost of every program, including the in-house agency, against the revenue, qualified applicants, or outside-agency costs it delivers or replaces. Manage vendor relationships.
Brand
- Own the corporate Bennett Family of Companies brand and the master brand standards.
- Lead marketing for the operating companies assigned to corporate marketing, including Bennett Motor Express.
- Partner with the Strategic Director of Field Marketing so the field-based brands stay consistent with the master brand and share assets, tools, and data.
- Lead creative services for print, digital, video, and environmental work, holding every deliverable to brand standards.
Campaigns and demand generation
- Plan and run campaigns that build awareness, generate qualified leads, and support the sales and business development teams.
- Use HubSpot for campaign execution, lead management, and reporting, partnering with sales on lead handoff and attribution.
- Directly manage the web and content team, who create and publish content, including video we shoot and edit in-house, for our websites (WordPress) and social channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube). Set their priorities, approve the content strategy and editorial calendar, and hold the standard for quality and consistency. The team works closely with communications to deliver campaigns and announcements.
- Own our video strategy. Video is central to how we market, so you will decide what we produce, for which audiences and channels, and how we measure it. Give creative direction from concept through final edit.
- Help set the calendar and content approach for the Transportation Nation Podcast. Manage the outside production firm, and build the business case for bringing production in-house.
- Direct our in-house media and AV production, including the podcast studio and the live capture and broadcast of our events, meetings, and productions. Make sure every production meets our quality standard.
Driver recruitment advertising (in-house agency)
- Lead our in-house agency for driver recruitment advertising, which replaced an outside agency. The team produces the video ads and runs our own ad tracking platform.
- Own the recruitment advertising strategy, creative direction, and budget, in partnership with the recruiting team.
- Manage the outside media buyer who places the ads, and verify reported results against our own tracking data.
- Report cost per qualified applicant and cost per hire by channel, and shift spend toward what works.
-
Events and trade shows
- Direct the corporate event planner, who plans and runs our events day to day.
- Approve every event plan, budget, and timeline. For no-fail events, present the approved plan directly to executive leadership, together with the VP, for one final sign-off.
- Approve trade show selection and budgets for corporate and assigned brands, and make sure post-show follow-up is completed and tracked in HubSpot.
- Report on event ROI and recommend which events to keep, expand, or cut.
-
Communications
- Direct the Manager of Marketing & Communications, who leads day-to-day internal and external communications. That includes the employee newsletter, leadership messages, announcements to staff, freight agents, and drivers, press releases, media relations, and customer content.
- Review and approve the communications strategy and calendar, and edit high-stakes content before it is published.
- Write executive communications yourself, and take over any communications work when a deadline or quality standard is at risk.
-
Team leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of 6–8, including goal-setting, annual reviews, and compensation recommendations.
- Run the department's project management process so work ships on time and to standard.
- Be the main marketing partner to business unit leaders, and be consistently available to them. Hold regular one-on-ones, spend time at their locations, and respond quickly. Their trust is one of the main ways this role is judged.
- Work as a player-coach. You can do any job on the team yourself and will step in when work is at risk. When you do, you also address the performance or capacity gap that caused it.
-
AI and productivity
- Lead the department's use of AI tools across content, design, research, campaign operations, and reporting.
- Find where AI can increase output, shorten turnaround, or sharpen strategy, then set standards for its use and train the team.
- Track and report the productivity gains to the VP.
