Overview

The Director of Emergency Nursing Services is accountable for the overall administration of the department in order to meet the objectives of the hospital and ARH System through planning, organizing, executing and evaluating the nursing care provided for patients in the department

Responsibilities

  • Manage the department efficiently through the planning, organization, and control of departmental activities.
  • Formulate and implement departmental objectives in alignment with system and hospital goals.
  • Develop, evaluate, implement, interpret, and maintain departmental plans, standards, and procedures for patient care delivery in compliance with system and hospital policies, governmental regulations, and regulatory agency requirements. Serve as a role model by adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Supervise the implementation of evidence-based management and performance improvement processes used to evaluate the effectiveness of patient care delivery systems within the department.
  • Participate as a member of the hospital management team and contribute to hospital strategic planning activities.
  • Manage personnel activities, including interviewing, selecting, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating employees, or recommending such actions as necessary.
  • Ensure employees receive appropriate orientation, required in-service education, maintain required licensure and certifications, and participate in programs that promote clinical competency and professional development.
  • Determine staffing needs and patterns and recommend appropriate staffing levels and skill mix consistent with the department's care delivery model.
  • Administer bargaining agreements at the departmental level.
  • Coordinate departmental activities and maintain productive working relationships with medical staff, support services personnel, students, and instructors.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in the field and recommend new services, products, and equipment as appropriate. Participate in continuing education programs designed for nursing leaders.
  • Provide direct patient care when advanced skills and clinical judgment are required and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
  • Adhere to hospital infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
  • Develop and prepare departmental budgets, reports, forms, and other required documentation.
  • Take administrative call responsibilities as delegated by the Chief Nursing Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.
  • Serve on hospital and system-wide committees and attend meetings as required.
  • Work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and additional hours as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
  • Current, unrestricted nursing license in the applicable state required.
  • Bachelor's degree required.

Preferred Education

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • National nursing certification preferred.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing supervision and/or nursing administration experience.
  • Formal training and/or experience in effective management techniques required.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to motivate and lead individuals and teams effectively.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals and groups.
