Leads membership growth, engagement, and retention strategies for a medical professional association, using data analysis and marketing to drive value and financial sustainability.
The Director, Growth & Engagement is a strategic leader responsible for driving membership growth, engagement, and retention through innovative, data-informed strategies. Partnering with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, this role leads long-term planning, recruitment initiatives, and efforts to strengthen the member value proposition.
The Director provides strategic oversight of engagement across programs, services, and advocacy, ensuring high-quality member experiences as aligned with organizational goals and membership strategy. This role oversees business intelligence functions as related to member and market data, including environmental insights, workforce and industry data.
Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position does have direct supervisory responsibilities, which may include serving as a coach and mentor for those they supervise.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Membership Growth
- Serve as strategic partner on recruitment and long-term membership growth, developing and executing strategies for net growth, retention, and financial sustainability.
- Build a robust prospect pipeline through market intelligence and outreach; identify emerging markets and trends to expand membership.
- Design and lead annual recruitment campaigns, partnering with Membership on integrated marketing, print/digital materials, and messaging.
Membership Value & Engagement
- Own the member value proposition — benefits, services, and engagement models — ensuring it stays central to organizational strategy.
- Provide strategic direction for engagement initiatives across programs, services, recognition, and advocacy, aligning with broader business goals and internal stakeholders.
- Facilitate collaboration to advance member engagement in advocacy, programs, and key organizational initiatives.
Member Insights, Research & Satisfaction
- Conduct annual member satisfaction and needs assessments (surveys, interviews, data analysis) to guide strategy and performance.
- Commission demographic reports and dashboards; interpret membership data and metrics to inform programmatic priorities and report trends (including retention/attrition) to leadership.
- Provide actionable insights and metrics to inform programmatic priorities and strategic decisions.
- Gather and interpret membership data to deepen organizational understanding of member needs and behaviors.
Operational & Financial Performance
- Streamline recruitment, retention, and engagement operations in collaboration with IT and Membership; oversee vendor relationships and drive continuous operational improvement.
- Monitor performance against budget, forecast trends, and identify non-dues revenue opportunities to meet financial targets.
- Oversee vendor relationships supporting membership marketing, engagement, and related services.
Organizational Collaboration & Education
- Educate staff on membership strategy, foster cross-departmental collaboration, and partner with internal teams to identify new benefits and improve service delivery.
- Communicate key membership metrics, including retention and attrition, to executive leadership and stakeholders.
Team Leadership & Innovation
- Lead, coach, and develop direct reports; ensure data accuracy and integrity across membership systems.
- Stay current on membership trends/best practices and recommend new tools and approaches for acquisition, engagement, and retention.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strategic and innovative thinker with experience developing and executing multi-year plans with measurable objectives.
- Critical and analytical thinking skills.
- Skills and ability to grow and retain membership, define membership benefits and work with staff to maximize member value from existing benefits.
- Strong computer and database management skills; experience with membership software is required.
- Must be an influential leader and team player.
- High sense of urgency and the ability to pivot as priorities are redirected.
- Superior oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with all professional levels of members, staff and vendors; strong membership service orientation essential; knowledge of current and emerging trends in the association membership field.
- Organized and comfortable juggling a variety of priorities.
- Ability to travel.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree Masters in business administration, management or marketing preferred.
- 10 years of experience in membership promotion, marketing, and retention.
- 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
- CAE certification preferred.
- Member association or non-profit experience preferred.
- Must have budget management experience.
