Director, Hardware Engineering & Integration - ATP
Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Hardware Engineering & Integration - ATP based in the United States.
We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to oversee hardware development, robotics integration, and commissioning for advanced industrial automation initiatives. In this full-time remote role, you will shape the design and deployment of robotic systems, autonomous mobile robots, machine vision cells, and specialized tooling across manufacturing environments. You will own the engineering standards and integration methods that help make deployments safer, faster, more cost-effective, and repeatable across multiple plants. Working across mechanical, electrical, controls, and commissioning disciplines, you will lead a multidisciplinary team while building internal capabilities and reducing dependence on external integrators. You will also partner with manufacturing, safety, and technology teams to ensure hardware is production-ready, compliant, and scalable. This is an opportunity to influence the future of industrial automation while translating innovative engineering concepts into reliable, plant-ready solutions.
Accountabilities
-
Lead the design, development, and validation of hardware, including robotic end effectors, grippers, tooling, industrial edge-computing equipment, enclosures, and cable and wire-harness systems.
-
Develop and maintain test cells for qualifying third-party robots and automation equipment against established engineering and safety standards before deployment.
-
Establish a consistent integration and commissioning methodology covering risk assessment, virtual commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and handover to plant operations.
-
Integrate robotic systems and automation cells with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), safety PLCs, human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and industrial communication networks, including PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and OPC UA.
-
Improve deployment efficiency and reduce costs and commissioning timelines through standardized designs, reusable controls templates, and structured lessons-learned processes.
-
Define device and supplier readiness requirements, ensuring equipment includes appropriate drivers, manifests, data interfaces, and safety documentation.
-
Align autonomous mobile robot (AMR) fleet suppliers and other equipment providers with open interface standards, including VDA 5050, and relevant internal integration requirements.
-
Manage equipment qualification processes and establish repeatable approval procedures that enable validated technologies to be deployed across multiple plants.
-
Incorporate integration responsibilities and requirements into supplier sourcing agreements to improve accountability and reduce external integration costs.
-
Design hardware for manufacturability, serviceability, cost efficiency, and production scalability, ensuring documentation and test plans support manufacturing handover without unnecessary redesign.
-
Plan production volumes and identify alternative suppliers for internally designed hardware as deployment needs increase.
-
Enforce functional safety requirements, including ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066, and ISO 13849, and require documented risk assessments and validated safety functions before production operation.
-
Collaborate with plant safety, controls, and cybersecurity teams to ensure secure and safe commissioning practices.
-
Lead, develop, and expand a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, controls, and commissioning engineers, establishing clear responsibilities, standard work, and career development pathways.
-
Build internal engineering and integration capabilities by progressively bringing high-volume automation work in-house while maintaining rigorous safety and quality standards.
-
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
-
At least 12 years of experience in automation, robotics, or industrial equipment engineering, including 5 or more years leading engineering teams.
-
Hands-on experience designing robotic cells and end-of-arm tooling and commissioning systems in production environments.
-
Strong knowledge of PLC and controls integration, particularly Rockwell and Siemens platforms, as well as industrial networks such as PROFINET and EtherNet/IP.
-
Working knowledge of robot functional safety standards, including ISO 10218 and ISO 13849, and established risk assessment practices.
-
Demonstrated experience taking hardware from prototype through manufacturing and production deployment.
-
Experience leading engineering teams on the plant floor and collaborating with plant leadership during launch and commissioning activities.
-
Strong leadership, technical decision-making, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
-
Ability to establish engineering standards, improve operational processes, and balance safety, reliability, cost, and delivery objectives.
-
Preferred qualifications: Experience working for an automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Tier 1 supplier, or major automation integrator.
-
Familiarity with virtual commissioning tools such as Process Simulate or equivalent platforms, along with digital twin workflows.
-
Experience deploying AMR fleets and working with open interface standards such as VDA 5050 and OPC UA.
-
Knowledge of industrial edge-computing hardware and its application in manufacturing environments.
-
Functional safety certification from TÜV or an equivalent organization, or a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
-
Competitive compensation package; the specific salary range is not disclosed in the available job description.
-
Generous paid time off (PTO).
-
Retirement and savings plans.
-
Stock investment plans.
-
Incentive compensation opportunities.
-
Opportunities for professional growth, personal development, and recognition.
-
The opportunity to lead strategic engineering initiatives and influence the design, integration, and deployment of advanced industrial automation systems.
-
Full-time remote work arrangement, with the position associated with Dearborn, Michigan.
-
Additional benefits may be available as part of the comprehensive employment package; specific healthcare coverage and other individual benefit details are not provided in the available description.
