Description
Mulberri is an AI-native InsurTech startup reimagining how commercial insurance is processed, assessed, and managed. We use AI, large language models (LLMs), and agentic workflows to solve complex, real-world challenges for brokers, insurers, and businesses.
We are looking for a Director of Engineering who can combine strategic thinking with a strong builder mindset. This is an opportunity to shape the technology direction of a fast-growing startup, build high-performing teams, and bring enterprise-grade AI solutions from concept to production.
You will:
- Lead and scale engineering teams across backend, frontend, cloud, data, and AI.
- Define the engineering vision, technical strategy, architecture, and execution roadmap.
- Own the delivery of secure, scalable, reliable, and high-performing enterprise solutions.
- Drive the development of AI-powered applications, intelligent document-processing systems, and agentic workflows.
- Guide the production implementation of LLMs, RAG, prompt engineering, tool calling, evaluation frameworks, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop systems.
- Establish strong engineering practices across architecture, code quality, testing, security, DevOps, MLOps/LLMOps, and observability.
- Work closely with U.S.-based clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to translate business challenges into practical technology solutions.
- Take ownership of end-to-end delivery—from planning and execution to quality, release, and production support.
- Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team of engineering managers, architects, AI engineers, and software engineers.
- Create a culture of ownership, speed, experimentation, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, AI models, frameworks, and platforms to identify opportunities for innovation.
- Partner with product and business teams to ensure engineering investments deliver measurable customer and business value.
Requirements
- 13+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience in engineering leadership and delivery management.
- Proven experience building and leading full-stack engineering teams.
- Demonstrated experience delivering production-grade AI, machine learning, or Generative AI applications.
- Strong understanding of LLM architectures, agentic workflows, RAG, prompt engineering, model evaluation, AI guardrails, and human-in-the-loop systems.
- Experience integrating commercial or open-source AI models into enterprise applications.
- Understanding of AI risks and challenges, including hallucinations, data privacy, security, explainability, model performance, and operational costs.
- Strong track record of delivering complex, multi-team, and multi-region technology programmes.
- Experience working directly with U.S.-based clients, stakeholders, or delivery teams.
- Strong knowledge of modern technologies such as Java, .NET, Python, React, Angular, AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, API architecture, cloud-native development, DevOps, and CI/CD.
- Familiarity with vector databases, embeddings, AI observability, model monitoring, and MLOps/LLMOps.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Experience in insurance, InsurTech, financial services, or another regulated industry is a strong advantage.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
