The Director of Finance & Accounting provides strategic financial leadership for an employee-owned industrial distribution and contract manufacturing organization. This role is responsible for the overall financial health of the business, including accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, treasury, cash flow management, financial reporting, internal controls, and ESOP financial administration. The Director partners closely with executive leadership to support growth initiatives, optimize working capital, improve profitability, and maximize long-term employee-owner value.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic financial leadership and partner with executive management to support business growth, operational improvements, capital investments, and long-term planning.
  • Direct all accounting functions, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Payroll Accounting, Cost Accounting, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Ensure the timely preparation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP while coordinating external audits, tax compliance, and lender reporting.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, financial forecasting, long-range planning, variance analysis, and executive reporting to support informed business decisions.
  • Oversee treasury management, including cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, credit facilities, liquidity planning, and investment of excess cash.
  • Drive working capital improvements through effective management of accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and the overall cash conversion cycle.
  • Monitor financial and operational performance by analyzing key metrics, identifying trends, and recommending opportunities to improve profitability, efficiency, and return on invested capital.
  • Partner with operations, sales, purchasing, engineering, and other business leaders to provide financial analysis, pricing support, customer profitability analysis, and capital investment evaluations.
  • Oversee manufacturing and distribution finance, including product costing, inventory accounting, gross margin analysis, manufacturing variances, and supply chain cost performance.
  • Manage the financial administration of the Company's ESOP, including repurchase obligation forecasting, valuation support, funding strategy development, and coordination with trustees, valuation advisors, auditors, and legal counsel.
  • Evaluate capital allocation decisions, including capital expenditures, acquisitions, debt management, and strategic investments to ensure alignment with company objectives and long-term value creation.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership regarding business performance, growth opportunities, operational initiatives, and strategic priorities.
  • Develop and improve financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities to increase efficiency, scalability, and accuracy across the organization.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, financial governance, and risk management practices while ensuring compliance with company policies, banking agreements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team while driving continuous process improvements, automation initiatives, and cross-functional financial collaboration.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance leadership experience, including oversight of accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial distribution, contract manufacturing, or a similar operational environment preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, treasury management, cost accounting, inventory accounting, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), and internal controls.
  • Experience managing cash flow, working capital, banking relationships, and strategic financial planning.
  • Experience supporting an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), including repurchase obligation forecasting and valuation support, is strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership, analytical, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to influence decisions and build strong relationships across all levels of the organization.
