Director of Pro Bono
Description
Director of Pro Bono
(Full-Time, Exempt Position)
Inner City Law Center is hiring a talented, dynamic lawyer to help end homelessness in Los Angeles. We are a nonprofit poverty-law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC’s 75+ attorneys fight for housing justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.
Position Description: The need for Inner City Law Center’s legal services far outstrips our capacity to provide support. Pro bono resources are one way that we seek to close this gap. In 2025, over 700 people (including over 400 attorneys) volunteered over 20,000 hours valued at over $13 million to support ICLC and our clients.
The Pro Bono Director leads ICLC's efforts to leverage these volunteers to provide high-quality legal services to clients through strategic pro bono collaborations, volunteer opportunities, internships, and fellowship programs. ICLC aims to increase the number and hours of pro bono attorneys by 50% over the next five years. The Pro Bono Director will lead ICLC’s efforts to expand capacity through new and existing partnerships and building the infrastructure necessary to effectively recruit and deploy pro bono resources. This will include developing and maintaining internal and external relationships, managing all case placements, overseeing the pro bono team and budget, running internship and externship programs, and working closely with the Development team to secure funding and manage grants, funding and related reporting.
Responsibilities: This is a senior, highly relational leadership role that requires both strategic program development and operational execution. The Director works closely with private law firms, corporate legal departments, bar associations, and law schools. They supervise ICLC’s Pro Bono Coordinator and work closely with ICLC attorneys and organizational leadership and with others internally and externally to ensure that pro bono resources are optimized, client-centered, and aligned with ICLC's mission and organizational priorities.
Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. At least ten years of experience as an attorney, including significant experience with private law firms or lawyers and with pro bono programs. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong work ethic. Excellent negotiation skills. Organized, innovative, and solution-oriented. Strong project management skills. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet short-notice deadlines. Ability to interact with a wide range of people in a kind, appropriate, client-centered manner. Membership in the California Bar is required—unless you are eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Aid Attorney under Rule 9.45 of the California Rules of Court. Must have a reliable form of transportation.
Compensation: Salary ranges from $131,250 - $168,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits. In accordance with California law, the anticipated pay range for this position is included in this posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors permitted by law. To support pay equity, we use an internal framework that emphasizes years of relevant full time experience. Other factors in final compensation decisions may include applicable skills, education, and market data.
