Director of Software Engineering- Core Global WAN
As a Director of Software Engineering within the Core Global Wide Area Network team at JPMorganChase, you will lead the architecture and engineering required to consolidate multiple network environments into a unified global platform. You will apply deep expertise in carrier-scale networking, segment routing, traffic engineering, and software-defined infrastructure to translate strategic architecture into production solutions.
You will work across architecture, engineering, operations, security, and risk teams to modernize how global connectivity services are designed, deployed, validated, and operated. This role requires a technical leader who can make high-impact design decisions, remain close to engineering execution, and use software, automation, telemetry, and enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities to improve network reliability and operational efficiency.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture, engineering, and execution of a multiyear transformation from multiple wide area networks to a unified global network platform.
- Define the technical strategy for carrier-scale routing, segment routing, traffic engineering, path optimization, capacity management, and network resiliency.
- Translate complex network architecture into executable engineering plans spanning design, certification, migration, implementation, and production rollout.
- Design and deliver software-defined capabilities that automate network configuration, route validation, change execution, monitoring, and operational workflows.
- Develop pre-change and post-change validation frameworks that identify configuration issues, routing anomalies, and potential resiliency risks.
- Apply enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities to support anomaly detection, predictive analysis, engineering reviews, and operational decision-making, with appropriate human validation and sensitive-data controls.
- Establish engineering standards and portfolio-level guardrails for automation and artificial intelligence-assisted workflows, ensuring traceability, auditability, security, and resiliency.
- Improve global network stability through telemetry, disciplined incident and problem management, repeat-issue remediation, and measurable reliability improvements.
- Partner with software engineering, infrastructure, cloud, security, architecture, operations, and control teams to align priorities and manage technical trade-offs.
- Provide technical leadership across strategic initiatives and influence engineering standards, platform roadmaps, and long-term investment decisions.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to senior stakeholders and communicate complex architecture, delivery risks, and engineering decisions clearly.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- Formal training or certification in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, network engineering, or a related technical discipline, and 10+ years of applied experience.
- Extensive experience designing, engineering, or operating large-scale global wide area networks, telecommunications backbones, cloud networks, or similarly complex network environments.
- Deep technical knowledge of Multiprotocol Label Switching, segment routing, Border Gateway Protocol, traffic engineering, routing policy, network resiliency, and capacity management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead both architecture-level design and hands-on technical execution for large, complex network transformation or migration programs.
- Advanced knowledge of network automation and software-defined infrastructure, including practical programming experience with Python, Go, or a comparable language.
- Experience developing engineering solutions using application programming interfaces, infrastructure as code, continuous integration and delivery practices, configuration management, and automated testing.
- Proven ability to build automated pre-change and post-change validation, network telemetry, monitoring, or anomaly-detection capabilities.
- Experience making high-impact technical decisions across architecture, engineering, certification, deployment, and production operations.
- Demonstrated experience applying enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities within technical workflows, including validation of generated outputs and appropriate handling of sensitive data.
- Ability to establish review, approval, and escalation standards for automation and artificial intelligence-assisted recommendations.
- Proven ability to influence across organizational boundaries and deliver complex, enterprise-impacting initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- Experience engineering networks at a telecommunications provider, hyperscale technology company, cloud provider, or other organization operating a large global backbone.
- Hands-on experience with Arista and Cisco network technologies in large-scale production environments.
- Experience consolidating multiple network environments or leading complex global network migrations.
- Experience developing advanced traffic-steering capabilities that extend beyond traditional primary and backup connectivity models.
- Knowledge of distributed systems, cloud and hybrid connectivity, observability platforms, and data-driven network operations.
- Experience applying machine learning or artificial intelligence to network validation, anomaly detection, predictive analysis, or operational automation.
- Demonstrated ability to strengthen risk and control practices through governance, compliance execution, exception management, and high-risk change reviews.
