The Opportunity: Director, EMEA Payroll
Location: Europe (remote / hybrid)
Reporting To: Senior Director, Global Payroll
The Director, EMEA Payroll is a key leadership role within the Global Payroll function, reporting directly to the Senior Director, Global Payroll.
Responsible for leading regional payroll operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), this role ensures precise, compliant, and timely payroll execution for Iron Mountain’s workforce in the region.
As a primary operational leader and transformation agent, you will drive process efficiency, leverage automation, and partner with regional stakeholders in Finance, Total Rewards, HR, and Legal. You will oversee regional vendor performance, support global payroll transformation initiatives, and build high-performing, customer-centric payroll operations across complex EMEA jurisdictions.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will:
Transform Regional Payroll Operations: Partner with the Senior Director, Global Payroll to execute the Global Payroll and Time transformation roadmap across EMEA. Drive towards "exception-free" payroll by streamlining inputs with Global Workforce Administration, HR Technology (Workday), and primary vendor partners (Strada).
Ensure Operational Precision & Compliance: Deliver consistent, error-free payroll processing across all EMEA countries. Ensure full adherence to country-specific tax mandates, statutory reporting, labor laws, and data protection requirements (e.g., GDPR).
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner locally and regionally with Finance, Treasury, Legal, and Total Rewards to align payroll processing with accounting, tax, and employee benefit requirements. Support M&A onboarding and regional integrations into global payroll systems.
Lead & Upskill Regional Teams: Oversee retained EMEA payroll specialists and manage vendor operations to deliver high-touch service to employees. Foster a culture of continuous learning, upskilling staff from transactional entry to data management and operational analysis.
Key responsibilities:
Operational Leadership & Transformation
Process Optimization & Automation: Implement digital workflows and automated validation tools to shorten payroll cycles, eliminate manual interventions, and reduce error rates across EMEA locations.
Vendor & Service Level Management: Manage regional payroll vendors (including Strada) against strict SLAs and KPIs, driving vendor consolidation and service consistency.
Continuous Improvement: Partner with HR Technology and Global Workforce Administration to harmonize payroll data inputs and optimize Workday integrations.
Governance, Compliance & Controls
Regulatory & Tax Compliance: Maintain expertise in EMEA statutory payroll regulations, digital tax reporting, and statutory filings. Ensure software and vendor logic are updated timely for local law changes.
Audit & Financial Controls: Enforce robust internal controls (SOX), data privacy rules (GDPR), and audit readiness across all EMEA payroll activities. Serve as primary contact for regional payroll audits.
Employee Experience & Stakeholder Alignment
Total Rewards & Benefits Execution: Oversee regional statutory and supplemental benefit payouts, profit-sharing, 13th-month payments, and equity distributions in coordination with Total Rewards.
Employee Service & Transparency: Elevate payroll service standards, ensuring timely resolution of employee inquiries and clear, accessible digital payslips.
M&A Regional Integration: Execute payroll due diligence, compliance mapping, and system integration for newly acquired entities in EMEA.
What You’ll Bring
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience: Extensive progressive leadership experience in multi-country EMEA payroll operations within a complex, global organization. Proven track record of managing regional payroll teams and vendor networks.
Education & Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field. Relevant payroll certification (e.g., CIPP or country-specific equivalent) highly preferred.
Technical Acumen: Direct experience with Workday HR/Payroll and enterprise payroll solutions (e.g., Strada/ADP). Proven capability in adopting automation, continuous processing, and digital analytics.
Regulatory Expertise: Strong working knowledge of EMEA labor laws, tax regulations, statutory benefit structures, and data protection mandates (GDPR).
Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to bridge operational payroll needs with Finance, Legal, and Total Rewards priorities.
People Leadership: Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop remote, cross-cultural teams across multiple time zones.
