The Air Traffic Organization (ATO) comprises 35,000 controllers, technicians, engineers, and support personnel whose daily efforts ensure that aircraft are safe, separated, and on time. The Office of Safety comprises highly skilled experts who proactively identify and mitigate operational risk in the National Airspace System.
The Director, Policy and Performance, oversees safety audits and assessments to ensure Air Traffic Organization (ATO) compliance with safety requirements and mitigates risks in the National Airspace System (NAS). The Director establishes the ATO safety management policy, develops safety performance targets, tools, and metrics, and oversees data and trend analyses to support ATO risk assessment and mitigation. Principal Responsibilities Oversees and maintains the ATO Safety Management System policy manual. Develops and modifies audits and integrated risk-based assessment policy and standards as required by law, rule, or regulation. Coordinates international safety management activities with international organizations to ensure global harmonization with air navigation service providers on safety policy and procedures. Reviews safety risk analyses of operational initiatives for programs in support of the Joint Resource Council Investment Decision process. Ensures the horizontal integration of the ATO safety mission and objectives throughout the organization. Collects safety data, tracks and monitors safety performance, analyzes risk for emerging trends, and evaluates emerging entrants, such as commercial space operations and Unmanned Aircraft Systems, for safe integration into the NAS. Represents the FAA on interagency and/or industry committees and national and international groups that ensure the global harmonization of safety management in air navigation.
