Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Director, Surgical Services, you will provide comprehensive leadership and accountability for the daily operations of both the Surgical Services and Women's Services Departments, ensuring high-quality patient care and fostering strong physician relations.

Every day you will plan, organize, direct, and evaluate all departmental services, including quality, administrative, and financial outcomes. You will establish and uphold nursing practice standards, empower clinical caregivers, and participate in patient care as needed, all while assuring adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements for both service lines.

To be successful in this role, you will possess extensive leadership experience in both surgical and women's services, a proven ability to manage complex operations, drive quality improvement, and build strong physician and staff relationships. Your commitment to patient care, regulatory compliance, and strategic departmental growth will be paramount.

  • Sets and enforces high standards for the quality of patient care delivered, ensuring supporting decision-making and operational processes reflect patient/physician needs/concerns.
  • Is accountable for preparing, monitoring, and managing the operational and capital budgets, understanding how to strengthen the unit through good financial planning and implementation, and applying key financial concepts to decision making.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and prioritizes time and resources to improve efficiency and overcome obstacles, and gives people the authority, resources, and guidance to make decisions and implement them.
  • Achieves unit goals and objectives using a participative approach to improve the quality of care and market position, while educating staff in performance improvement activities and coaching them for enhanced problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Leads the process of developing a challenging and realistic unit vision, ensuring that the vision reflects organizational and individual values and ideals, and establishes specific leadership goals that help connect staff with the vision and necessary unit actions and organizational long-term strategies.
  • Engages in a collaborative partnership with physicians, peers, staff, and administration to promote interdisciplinary and interdepartmental communication and cooperation.

This role will manage a staff of 55 to 70 employees with direct accountability for one (1) to two (2) cost centers (or up to three (3)), provided the total head-count remains at or below 70). Oversight of Surgical Services for five (5) operating rooms, including the following specialities: Orthopedic, General, Bariatric, Hand, Podiatry, GYN, and Urology.

Job Requirements

Required

  • A degree in nursing (BSN or MSN).
  • A Master's degree in a healthcare-related field within two (2) years of hire. Candidates holding a current BSN may satisfy this requirement with a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) or a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
  • RN license to practice in state of employment as applicable.
  • Four (4) years progressive clinical leadership experience.
  • Nursing Specialty Certification: Sit within six (6) months. Must achieve within one (1) year of hire or transfer to the role.

Preferred

  • Experience in acute care.
