Position Overview
Leads and performs activities in assigned functional area, managing a team of facultative underwriters and providing back-up support of regional underwriting lead role. Develops, maintains, and communicates expertise in assigned functional area. Using critical thinking, evaluates and classifies medical, non-medical, and financial risks on large, more complex and challenging life risks/cases. Develops and manages client relationships to ensure client's needs are met while ensuring profitable underwriting decisions and maintaining RGA Re's philosophy. Manages departmental client centricity endeavors. Recommends and participates in the development and implementation of process improvements that may extend beyond the area of oversight. Responsibilities may also include leading and managing underwriting initiatives including, but not limited to, SUP/SUP at Scale operational management, sales and process enablement, and business execution.
Responsibilities
- Leads and performs the duties related to daily team management. Duties include but are not limited to co-signing of cases, workflow supervision, general oversight of work, associate development and mentoring activities, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment.
- Assists underwriting leadership as underwriting client contact for assigned business development region in review of underwriting aspects related to pricing quotes and review of client requirements coordinating with Business Development, Pricing, Claims, Treaties, and other departments as needed.
- Collaborates with the various functional areas, including, but not limited to, Underwriting, Business Development, and CMS to help manage and assist the regional teams, fac exclusive teams SUP teams, and SUI in developing and delivering memorable and impactful solutions for clients, aligned to our foundational resources and strategy approach to client centric design.
- Works alongside CMS, Regional Leads, Underwriting, and SUI to coordinate and drive client centricity strategy. Ensures that client communications regarding RGA services are coordinated, clear, measurable, and tied back to the original scope of work, celebrating successes and adapting to changes along the way.
- Organizes and shares client industry and organizational information to help RGA anticipate needs, prepares context-relevant recommendations, and identifies future expansion opportunities. Works alongside CMS, Regional Leads, Underwriting, and SUI to coordinate subsequent client communications and interactions.
- Assists in completing underwriting quality scorecards and/or related documents ensuring pricing evaluations/recommendations meet our guidelines and are profitable.
- Assists in performing data analysis for clients, senior underwriting management, sales/marketing and actuarial departments by summarizing data resulting in meaningful reports, comparison grids, scorecards, and other formats as needed.
- Keeps abreast of and monitors client company special underwriting programs that RGA Re participates in such as conversion programs, table shave programs, requirements guidelines and preferred guidelines.
- Appraises and underwrites large, complex, and challenging risks for life insurance up to approval authority. Ensures underwriting quotes are sound, competitive, and profitable to RGA. Under direction, makes exceptions within RGA philosophy and practice, balancing attention to client relationships and profitable business. Assists in co-signing facultative cases, participating in meetings or projects as requested.
- Develops and manages client relationships by providing underwriting solutions to clients through partnering with them to identify unique, creative ways to solve their problems, improve their business results and by effectively communicating, negotiating, and selling underwriting decisions which result in strong business relationships.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or equivalent related work experience (minimum 8 years)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) Science or Business is preferred
- 7+ Years of reinsurance underwriting experience or 9+ years direct underwriting experience
- Intermediate Word, SQL/Query and Excel skills
- Advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents.
- Highly advanced oral and written communication skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates.
- Advanced knowledge of broad business practices
- Advanced persuasion and negotiating skills when working with clients to present quotes and/or solutions and to resolve issues/problems.
- Advanced ability to lead change management.
- Highly advanced investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources.
- Advanced ability to manage multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities and deliverables.
- Advanced ability to comprehend, analyze and apply vast amounts of medical and financial information quickly to making sound financial underwriting and risk assessments.
- Advanced knowledge of insurance principles, underwriting policies and procedures and guidelines for dealing with risk analysis.
- Advanced knowledge of medicine, law, accounting, finance as applied to the evaluation of life reinsurance risks and of life insurance risks.
- Advanced knowledge of industry practices, trends and applications and the ability to communicate this knowledge to clients and apply it to meeting clients’ needs.
- ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, or CLU accreditation or progress towards accreditation is preferred.
- 10+ years reinsurance underwriting experience is preferred.

Compensation Range:
$107,060.00 - $159,390.00 AnnualBase pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
