Distribution Designer- Greater Minneapolis
Location: Remote (Must reside in the Greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area or Northwest Wisconsin)
Compensation: $33,000 - $91,000 (based on experience)
Core Responsibilities:
- Prepare construction drawings for overhead and underground electric distribution, telecommunications, and fiber facilities.
- Assist with electric distribution line design (2.4kV-34kV).
- Develop make-ready designs for joint-use projects.
- Conduct field visits, site inspections, and engineering fielding activities.
- Support project estimates, schedules, and design deliverables.
- Perform QA/QC reviews and ensure compliance with engineering standards.
- Apply NESC, utility, and local regulatory requirements to design work.
- Analyze field-collected data and update design software accordingly.
- Coordinate with utilities, clients, and project teams to develop cost-effective design solutions.
- Support construction activities and provide engineering assistance as needed.
General Qualifications & Experience:
- Must reside in Minnesota (Greater Minneapolis/St. Paul preferred) or Northwest Wisconsin.
- High School Diploma/GED with 4+ years of utility, construction, drafting, or technical design experience.
OR
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Construction, or related field with 2-4 years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of utility distribution design and construction practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Utility distribution design experience.
- Experience with overhead or underground electric distribution systems.
- Knowledge of pole loading software such as SPIDAcalc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS, SPANS, NJUNS, or IkeGPS.
- Familiarity with NESC standards, joint-use engineering, and make-ready design.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to perform fieldwork in varying weather conditions and terrain.
- Willingness to travel overnight as project needs require.
- Ability to pass a fit-for-duty exam and pre-employment drug screening.
- Must be able to work independently in a remote environment while supporting utility client projects.
