DREDGE MECHANIC
Description
The Dredge Mechanic works in the plant workshop and supports the marine and dredging fleet (CSDs, TSHDs, backhoe dredgers and support craft). The role overhauls, tests and reassembles mechanical components to OEM specification and class requirements. The mechanic is also mobilized onboard for breakdown and planned maintenance work when required.
The role reports to the Workshop Foreman and works closely with the machining, fabrication, and stores teams. Safety, quality records and component traceability are essential parts of the job.
Hydraulic cylinders (light and heavy-duty)
- Dismantle, inspect and measure rods, barrels, pistons, glands and end fittings against OEM tolerances.
- Decide whether to repair, re-chrome, or replace parts based on their condition.
- Fit seal kits and wear bands to OEM drawings, then reassemble to the specified torque.
- Bench test (proof pressure, internal leakage, stroke, cushioning) and record the results.
Bearing blocks and sheave assemblies
- Dismantle and inspect bearing blocks, bearings, shafts, housings, seals and sheave grooves.
- Fit bearings with the correct fit, clearance, preload, lubrication and sealing.
- Check alignment, axial clearance and free rotation after assembly.
Clutches and brakes (hydraulic and pneumatic)
- Overhaul multi-disc, band, jaw, shoe and air-actuated clutches, including actuators, rotary unions and friction elements.
- Measure wear, set clearances and verify engagement and release function per the OEM manual.
Gearboxes
- Strip, inspect and rebuild reduction, planetary and winch gearboxes.
- Assess gear wear patterns, set backlash and bearing preload, check contact patterns, then fill and run test.
Dredge valves
- Overhaul blade gate, butterfly, and other valves, including actuators.
- Replace worn seats, seals, gates and stems, then pressure test and record the results.
Onboard and general duties
- Carry out onboard repairs and planned maintenance using portable tools, within vessel permit systems.
- Keep job cards, measurement sheets, test records and photos for every overhaul, and keep traceability of replaced parts.
- Request spares and consumables accurately, and keep tools and measuring instruments calibrated.
- Support lifting and rigging of heavy components with certified personnel.
HSE
- Apply lockout/tagout and verify zero energy before work.
- Follow permit-to-work procedures for cold work, hot work, confined space, working at height and lifting.
- Report incidents and near misses.
5 to 10 years of hands-on overhaul experience in dredging, marine, offshore or heavy plant.
Proven experience overhauling hydraulic cylinders, gearboxes, clutches and large bearings.
Able to read mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic drawings, schematics and OEM manuals.
Competent with precision measuring tools (micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, feeler gauges) and torque and tensioning equipment.
Valid UAE driving licence (preferred).
