E2E Position - General Marketing

The opportunity
As a Product Architect, you own the technical vision and architecture for one or more of Avalara's products. You will define how systems are designed, guide engineering teams toward scalable and reliable solutions, and make the high-impact technical decisions that shape our platform for the long term. This is a senior technical leadership role for someone who combines deep engineering expertise with strong judgment and the ability to influence across teams.
You operate as a technical leader across multiple teams, set architectural direction, and partner closely with product management and engineering leaders to align technology with business goals.

What you will do

• Define and own the architecture and technical vision for one or more products, balancing scalability, reliability, security, performance, and cost.
• Lead the design of complex systems, services, and integrations, and guide teams through implementation.
• Set technical standards, patterns, and best practices, and drive their adoption across engineering teams.
• Make and document high-impact technical decisions and trade-offs, and communicate them clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Partner with product management to shape the roadmap and ensure the architecture supports business and customer needs.
• Evaluate new technologies, tools, and approaches, and guide build-versus-buy and modernization decisions.
• Identify and address technical risk, debt, and scalability challenges proactively.
• Mentor and elevate engineers, fostering strong design and engineering practices across teams.
• Support delivery by helping troubleshoot complex issues and unblock teams.

What you will bring

• 8 or more years of software engineering experience, including significant experience in architecture or technical leadership roles.
• Proven track record designing large-scale, distributed, cloud-based systems.
• Deep expertise in one or more modern programming languages and modern software design principles.
• Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), microservices, APIs, and data architecture.
• Excellent judgment on technical trade-offs across scalability, reliability, security, and cost.
• Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to influence and align teams and leaders.
• Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical standards across teams.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-scale, high-availability, transaction-heavy systems.
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture, containers, and orchestration (such as Docker and Kubernetes).
• Experience with data platforms, streaming, or machine learning infrastructure.
• Exposure to the tax, compliance, fintech, or ERP domains.
