Early-Career Software Engineer - SWE-I
Summary
Early-career software engineer at an early-stage startup building a greenfield, AI-native platform. Day to day you design and ship backend modules, APIs, and user-facing UI alongside senior engineering leadership, using AI coding tools like Claude Code, Copilot, and Cursor. Pays $115k-$135k plus equity; Irvine-based with remote option.
Compensation: $115k – $135k • 0.05% – 0.15%
Role Summary
Come join us at the ground level. We are early, and the core platform is greenfield — the systems you build here are the ones the company will run on for years, and there is no legacy code standing between you and real ownership. You will do that building alongside seasoned engineering leadership that treats coaching and mentoring as part of the job, not an afterthought: direct, hands-on guidance from a lead engineer and a CTO who have shipped production systems at scale. We care most about how you think, how fast you learn, and your ability to ship working software — prior years of professional experience are not required. As an Early-Career Software Engineer you will build and scale core features from day one, across both the backend and the user-facing interface, working directly with senior engineering leadership. This is an AI-native engineering team. You will use modern AI-assisted development tools — Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor — to produce and review AI-generated code that meets enterprise standards for quality, security, and maintainability, while building the judgment to know when the code is right.
What Makes This Role Different
Unusually broad growth. You will wear many hats on a small team, building an AI-native platform with agentic workflows from the ground up — greenfield work that is rare and hard to replicate at a larger company. Build agentic systems, not just code with AI. Beyond using AI to ship faster, you help build agentic workflows and the model harness — the evaluation, guardrails, orchestration, and observability that make models dependable in a complex, regulated domain — gaining hands-on experience that is rare and hard to replicate early in a career. Apprenticeship, not tickets. Rather than narrow tickets, you sit close to the decisions — architecture, trade-offs, and product direction — and build judgment that typically takes years to develop elsewhere. Direct access to leadership. You work alongside the lead engineer and the CTO, with a short path from idea to shipped. Ownership from day one. Engineers here are owners. You will receive a meaningful equity stake; we walk you through the full structure at the offer stage.
Key Responsibilities
Design, test, and deploy production-grade software alongside the senior team. Build responsive, accessible user interfaces and connect them cleanly to backend services. Break complex algorithmic and system-design problems into clean, maintainable code. Take ownership of core backend modules, internal engine logic, and API endpoints. Model business problems using Domain-Driven Design — bounded contexts, aggregates, and a shared domain language that maps code to how the business actually works. Apply SOLID principles, established design patterns, and engineering best practices to keep the codebase modular and testable as it grows. Use Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor to develop and review AI-generated code for enterprise use, and participate in code reviews focused on technical rigor and design quality.
Your First 90 Days
Ship a meaningful production change in your first few weeks. Take ownership of a backend module or a user-facing surface end to end. Establish an AI-assisted workflow, and learn to critically evaluate and harden the code these tools produce.
Core Qualifications
Strong problem solver: You reason clearly about data structures, memory, and time complexity, and you enjoy finding and removing bottlenecks. We prioritize problem-solving above all else. Self-directed: Given an open-ended problem and a target, you can work out the architecture, trade-offs, and execution path with limited hand-holding. Curious about fundamentals: You want to understand how things work under the hood — from database indexes to network protocols to browser rendering — not just wire up APIs. Design-minded: You care about how software is structured, not just whether it runs, and you write code others can read, extend, and safely change. Education / foundation: A BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with a solid command of data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and basic system architecture. Languages: Fluency in at least one modern language (e.g., Python, TypeScript, Go, Rust, or .NET/C#) and the ability to pick up new stacks quickly; working knowledge of front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript) with exposure to a modern UI framework such as React, Vue, or Svelte. AI-assisted development: You are eager to work day-to-day with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor, and to critically evaluate and harden the code they produce.
Specialized Domain Experience (a plus, not required)
Exposure to or genuine interest in one of our core domains is a plus but not required: payments, healthcare data, treasury/financial systems, or AI vision.
Bonus Points
A portfolio beyond coursework — capstone projects, hackathons, open-source contributions, or personal projects. Strong engineers demonstrate their skills in many ways; this is a plus, not a requirement. Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design, SOLID, and common design patterns, or a clear appetite to learn them quickly.
