Job Summary:

The EH&S / Training Manager is a field-first safety leader, skilled trainer, and operational partner responsible for Seattle Tree Care's safety, training, and incident management programs. Working closely with the Director of Operations, this role helps crews find safer, smarter, and more productive ways to work. At STC, safety is always nonnegotiable, but working safely should never mean working less efficiently. The right person brings the field credibility to earn the respect of experienced crews and the organizational, computer, and written communication skills to build and manage a training program, document and report on investigations, and keep day-to-day administrative work on track. Our goal is for crews to see this person as someone who helps them do their jobs better, not someone who simply tells them what they're doing wrong.

Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside crews in the field, demonstrating proper techniques, coaching crew leaders, and contributing directly to field operations
  • Partner proactively with the Director of Operations to identify upcoming technical removals, crane work, storm response, and other high-risk jobs where involvement can reduce risk, provide hands-on training, solve problems, or increase productivity
  • Partner with the President, Director of Operations, and HR to design, implement, and manage STC's internal training program, including technical skill development, competency assessments, crew leader training, and ongoing field coaching
  • Lead hands-on training in climbing, aerial rescue, rigging, chainsaw and equipment use, aerial lift operation, and emergency response
  • Lead accident, injury, property damage, and significant near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis and corrective actions tracked through to implementation
  • Work alongside HR on workers' compensation claims, documentation, and return-to-work coordination
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely written documentation, including incident and investigation reports, corrective action plans, training materials, safety communications, and trend reports for leadership
  • Maintain and improve the Safety Manual, SOPs, inspections, and digital training and certification records, and ensure compliance with ANSI Z133, OSHA, and Washington State L&I requirements with an emphasis on practical implementation in the field
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Strong practical tree care experience, including climbing, rigging, removals, and equipment operation, required
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, coaching, or developing others required
  • Ability to build, organize, and manage a structured training program required
  • Proficiency with computers and standard business software, including Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) or Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), required; ability to build and maintain spreadsheets and quickly learn digital record-keeping, training-tracking, and reporting systems
  • Strong written communication skills required, including the ability to write clear, accurate, well-organized incident reports, investigation summaries, SOPs, training materials, and emails
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Z133, OSHA, and Washington State L&I safety requirements required
  • Experience with incident investigations or workers' compensation claims preferred
  • ISA Certified Arborist, TCIA CTSP, TRAQ, EHAP, and First Aid/CPR certifications preferred; demonstrated capability and fit with our operating environment carry significant weight
  • Sound judgment and the confidence to stop work when necessary while maintaining positive, productive relationships with crews
  • Strong communication skills, initiative, humility, organizational discipline, and a genuine interest in developing others
  • Valid Washington State driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Requirements and Skills:

  • Field Presence Required (Essential Job Function): Must regularly be present on active jobsites across the greater Seattle region. This role coaches, trains, and supports crews in real time, which requires frequent, hands-on time in the field.
  • Ability to traverse uneven, rugged terrain at active jobsites in variable Pacific Northwest weather
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during field training, observations, and job site assessments
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (training equipment, PPE, and safety materials)
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods to complete documentation, reporting, and administrative tasks
  • Ability to demonstrate arborist techniques, equipment, and PPE in training and field settings
  • Ability to work safely around active operations involving chainsaws, chippers, cranes, aerial lifts, and climbing equipment
  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to identify hazards and communicate clearly in noisy field environments
  • Ability to travel frequently between jobsites across the greater Seattle region
