About the Role

Our Federal government client is seeking an EL1 Senior Cloud Engineer to support the delivery and transition of support systems within a complex operational environment.
This role requires technical leadership in the design, implementation and continuous improvement of a complex cloud-based document management environment, leveraging Azure technologies, Infrastructure as Code, automation and practices to deliver secure, scalable, resilient and compliant solutions.


Key Duties and Responsibilities -The Senior Cloud Engineer will:
  • Lead the design, build and configuration of Microsoft Azure cloud platform services.
  • Establish and maintain Azure landing zones, networking, identity, monitoring, security and governance services.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (Bicep, Terraform or similar) solutions using industry-standard automation tools.
  • Design and implement cloud-native and platform services including Azure App Services, Azure SQL Managed Instance and supporting Azure services.
  • Support the migration of PDMS application from legacy hosting environments to Azure PaaS.
  • Implement Azure DevOps pipelines and automation to support continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  • Contribute to solution architecture, technical design and implementation planning.
  • Implement policy driven data protection practices to safeguard cloud solutions.
  • Design, implement and maintain Azure cloud infrastructure using industry-standard engineering practices to achieve optimal performance, scalability, reliability, security and cost efficiency.
  • Implement and maintain cloud security, identity, monitoring, backup and disaster recovery capabilities in accordance with Microsoft and Australian Government best practices.
  • Implement and maintain security controls to ensure compliance with ISM, PSPF, Australia's Foundations for modern defensible architecture, ASD Blueprint for a Secure Cloud and departmental security requirements.
  • Support security assurance, compliance and accreditation activities, including IRAP assessments, remediation of security findings, privacy assessments and ATO readiness.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, implementation guides, architectural artefacts and operational procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge transfer to APS staff and other operational teams to build internal platform capability.
  • Work collaboratively with architects, developers and project stakeholders to resolve technical issues and delivery risks.
  • Take into account and design a cost-effective cloud service delivery, recommending optimisation opportunities, and ensuring cloud design and operational decisions are informed by financial, performance and business considerations."
Highly Desirable Experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience in cloud engineering role.
  • Demonstrated experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g. Bicep, Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines, applying DevOps methodologies to automate and optimise cloud infrastructure delivery.
  • Demonstrated expertise in cloud architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices, to design and implement secure, compliant, and scalable cloud solutions.
  • Strong understanding of Australian Government security, risk and assurance processes (e.g. IRAP, PSPF)
  • Experience mentoring or leading junior technical staff is highly valued.
  • Relevant cloud certifications (Azure Administrator or equivalent) are advantageous
  • Experience in delivering similar cloud solutions in complex, whole-of-government applications within secure and regulated environments.
  • Knowledge/experience of Windows Server and SQL Server, SharePoint, .NET Framework, Angular, IIS, Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) would be ideal.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and team collaboration abilities.
  • Experience in working with a technical team to optimise cloud consumption to improve efficiency, performance, and service reliability
