The Opportunity


A leading engineering technology business is looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join its growing team in Colchester. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the design, development and testing of advanced industrial machinery, supporting both new product development and the ongoing improvement of an established product range. Working as part of a collaborative engineering team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects from initial design through to prototyping, testing and production.


The Role


As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the electrical and electronic design of new machinery, as well as maintaining and improving existing products.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and laying out electrical support systems for complex industrial machinery.
  • Designing and documenting electrical panels, PCBs and general machine wiring.
  • Producing basic mechanical designs for electro-mechanical components and systems.
  • Carrying out practical electrical and electronic prototyping and testing.
  • Specifying, documenting and managing electrical Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Supporting the ongoing improvement and development of existing products.
  • Working collaboratively with mechanical, software and other engineering disciplines throughout project delivery.
  • Contributing to the successful delivery of medium to large-scale engineering projects.


About You


We are looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with a strong practical approach and experience working within an industrial engineering environment.


You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a demonstrable equivalent level of experience.
  • Several years' experience designing electrical and/or electronic systems within an industrial environment.
  • Experience designing electro-mechanical systems, such as robotics, production automation or similar machinery.
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team on medium to large engineering projects.
  • Strong experience designing electrical control panels, including circuit breakers, contactors and associated components.
  • Experience specifying and designing wiring looms for electrical machinery.
  • Experience with electrical/mechanical CAD packages; experience with AutoCAD, Inventor or Cadstar would be advantageous.
  • Strong practical electrical and electronic skills, particularly around prototyping, fault-finding and testing.
  • Knowledge of relevant electrical safety standards, such as IEC 61010 and NFPA 79.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach to problem solving.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team while also taking ownership of individual projects and responsibilities.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-moving engineering environment.
