Electrical Design Engineer (Power Transformers), Melbourne

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with a strong background in high-voltage power transformer design to join a leading Australian transformer manufacturer based in Melbourne's south-east. This is an opportunity to work on complex transformer projects for utilities, renewable energy developments, mining operations and critical infrastructure customers across Australia and overseas. You'll play a key role in the design and development of large power transformers, ideally bringing experience with units rated up to 300kV and large MVA capacities.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll be responsible for the electrical design and technical delivery of power transformer projects from concept through to manufacture and testing. You will collaborate closely with mechanical design, manufacturing, testing, quality and project teams to ensure designs meet customer specifications, industry standards and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop high-voltage power transformers up to 300kV
• Perform electrical design calculations including core, winding and insulation systems
• Prepare technical specifications, design documentation and engineering reports
• Conduct thermal, dielectric and short-circuit performance assessments
• Review customer requirements and provide technical solutions
• Liaise with manufacturing teams to support production and resolve technical issues
• Participate in design reviews, factory testing and commissioning activities
• Ensure compliance with relevant Australian and international standards
• Support continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering function

About You

We're looking for someone who can bring hands-on experience in transformer design and a solid understanding of high-voltage equipment.

Essential

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Experience designing power transformers up to 300kV
• Strong knowledge of transformer theory, insulation systems and magnetic design
• Experience performing electrical design calculations and technical analysis
• Ability to interpret customer specifications and industry standards
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

Highly Regarded

• Experience with transformers above 100MVA
• Exposure to utility, transmission or renewable energy projects
• Experience in transformer manufacturing environments
• Familiarity with IEC, IEEE and Australian standards
• Chartered status or working towards chartership
