Canyon’s products have been widely adopted and proven in-service across a wide range of civilian, paramilitary and military fixed-wing and rotorcraft applications. Over the years, we’ve become known as the benchmark in aircraft tactical communication and audio equipment for Air Ambulance, Law Enforcement, SAR, EMS, Electronic News Gathering, Military and Marine applications. Products include digital and analog radio/audio management systems, Tac/Com, VHF/UHF radio systems, intercoms, data interface accessories, and aural warning.

Role purpose (position scope):

The Electrical Engineer supports the design, development, integration, verification, qualification, production, and sustaining engineering of airborne communication and control electronics within the Radio Business Unit. The position works cross-functionally with RF, software, systems, mechanical, manufacturing, test, quality, and supply chain teams to deliver reliable, configuration-controlled products and technically sound evidence for customer and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain electronic assemblies, schematic designs, circuit interfaces, wiring/interconnects, and supporting engineering drawings for airborne radio and control products.
  • Perform circuit-level analysis, component selection, derating, power-budget assessment, signal integrity evaluation, and troubleshooting of analog/digital and power-distribution functions.
  • Develop or support engineering requirements, design documentation, interface definitions, test procedures, and requirements-to-verification traceability.
  • Plan and execute bench verification and design characterization using oscilloscopes, DMMs, electronic loads, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and automated test systems as appropriate.
  • Investigate anomalies and field/production failures through structured root-cause analysis, controlled experiments, data evaluation, and documented corrective actions.
  • Support environmental and EMC qualification activities, including preparation, testing, discrepancy resolution, and objective-evidence packages to applicable program requirements (e.g., DO-160 and other contractual standards).
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Test Engineering to improve production testability, work instructions, acceptance criteria, first-pass yield, reliability, and transition of designs into repeatable manufacture.
  • Participate in engineering change control, configuration management, supplier technical reviews, obsolescence mitigation, and sustaining-engineering activities.
  • Coordinate technical deliverables with internal teams, suppliers, and customers; communicate risks, dependencies, verification status, and recovery actions clearly.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered under company policy.
  • Practical experience with electronic hardware design, integration, debugging, and laboratory verification.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, assembly drawings, specifications, test data, and component datasheets.
  • Working understanding of analog and digital circuits, interfaces, basic RF concepts, power electronics, and PCB manufacturing constraints.
  • Strong technical writing, problem-solving, prioritization, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with airborne radios, avionics, embedded systems, or safety/mission-critical electronics.
  • Familiarity with DO-160, MIL-STD-461, AS9100, IPC workmanship standards, or similar qualification and manufacturing frameworks.
  • Experience with Altium, OrCAD, Cadence, or comparable ECAD tools; Jira/SVN or other engineering configuration tools.
  • Experience with automated test equipment, Python/LabVIEW or other instrumentation automation, and structured statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of failure analysis, DFMEA/PFMEA, design-for-test, design-for-manufacture, and supplier technical investigations.

Measures of Success

  • Timely completion of assigned design and verification deliverables with traceable evidence.
  • Effective closure of technical investigations and reduction in repeat production or field failures.
  • Improved test coverage, production yield, and engineering-change execution with controlled documentation.
  • Clear communication and proactive resolution of technical risks and cross-functional dependencies.

Role Expectations and Working Conditions

Collaborates across engineering, manufacturing, test, quality, supply chain, program management, and external technical stakeholders. Work is primarily office/laboratory based with occasional factory-floor activity and potential program-related travel. Must follow site safety, ESD, quality, document-control, and information-security procedures.
