Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sr. Electrical Estimator will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil electrical construction projects. This role focuses on analyzing project documents, developing detailed estimates, and assisting with bid preparation for municipal, infrastructure, and design-build work.

The Sr. Electrical Estimator will work collaboratively with project managers, and operations teams to ensure complete and timely bid submissions. This position is expected to contribute to multiple estimates annually, typically ranging from smaller-scale projects up to large infrastructure work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage bid scheduling, bid closeout, and overall proposal coordination for electrical scopes on heavy civil and infrastructure projects.
  • Review electrical project drawings, specifications, contract documents, addenda, and related documentation to determine the complete scope of work, including power distribution, lighting, controls, communications, instrumentation, and other electrical systems as applicable.
  • Compile and incorporate historical cost data, electrical productivity rates, labor requirements, equipment, material pricing, subcontractor/vendor quotations, and current market conditions into estimates.
  • Prepare conceptual budgets and detailed electrical cost estimates, including quantity takeoffs, labor hours, material, equipment, subcontractor, and vendor costs.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as required to evaluate existing conditions, constructability, site logistics, and electrical scope requirements.
  • Identify electrical scope gaps, exclusions, conflicts, risks, constructability concerns, and value engineering opportunities and incorporate appropriate recommendations into estimates.
  • Prepare complete electrical bid packages, including pricing breakdowns, clarifications, assumptions, exclusions, alternates, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain organized and accurate estimating files and documentation to substantiate estimate quantities, labor, material pricing, subcontractor quotations, and other estimate assumptions.
  • Lead the electrical portion of the bid-to-project handoff, including cost coding, budget setup, estimate reconciliation, and communication of key assumptions and risks to the project team.
  • Track awarded electrical contracts and support the pricing of change orders, extra work items, field directives, and other potential revenue opportunities.
  • Coordinate with Project Management, Operations, Engineering, Purchasing, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to gather, evaluate, and validate electrical estimating inputs.
  • Maintain and update electrical estimating databases, including labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and production rates.
  • Review subcontractor and vendor proposals for scope completeness, exclusions, qualifications, and pricing accuracy, and identify discrepancies or potential gaps.
  • Follow company procedures and standards related to AccuBid or equivalent estimating systems and ensure electrical estimates are accurate, complete, competitive, and submitted within established deadlines.

Qualifications

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 3–7 years of experience in construction estimating, cost control, or project engineering, with at least 2–4 years in estimating.
  • Experience in heavy civil electrical construction, including areas such as:
    • Underground utilities and duct banks
    • Roadway and highway lighting
    • Traffic signals and ITS systems
    • Substations or power distribution
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with unit pricing, takeoffs, and bid preparation processes.
  • OSHA training (or willingness to obtain).

Software skills:

  • Microsoft Office applications
  • HCSS (including Accubid)
  • Scheduling software/CPM (including Primavera and MS Project)
