Embedded Developer to a brand new Malmö team 🚀

Discussion

Summary

Embedded developer joining one of the first engineers at a new Malmö office of a global tech company, building device firmware for its video surveillance product. Day to day: kernel- and user-mode Linux development from bootloader to apps, hardware test/diagnosis tooling, and video/audio streaming work. Core stack: C/C++, Linux, ARM, gRPC, WebSocket/REST.

About the role

We are working with a global tech company that is now opening an office in Malmö. We are looking for an Embedded Developer to join a brand new team dedicated to the company's video surveillance product, one of the fastest-growing parts of a wider ecosystem spanning networking, surveillance, VoIP and access control.

This is the kind of opportunity that only exists at the very start of something. You would be one of the first engineers on site in Malmö, helping establish the company locally and set up the on-site lab, with real influence over how the local team, its ways of working and its technical direction take shape. The product itself is already out at scale, so this is not a blank page: it is a chance to become a key person in growing the company's presence, both locally in Malmö and across the rest of Europe.

As an Embedded Developer you will work on the software running on the devices themselves and on the layer where the hardware meets the wider platform, with a strong focus on performance, reliability and system design, close to both the hardware and the surrounding cloud services. It is a good fit if you enjoy building software that has to work flawlessly on hundreds of thousands of devices out in the field.

You will join a highly product-driven environment with real ownership and influence over technical decisions, where the team combines the pace of a startup with the reach and scale of a global tech company.

Your main responsibilities
  • Implement kernel mode and user mode applications for the product's device firmware, from bootloader up to user-space applications, including Linux Kernel, rootfs, Websocket, RESTful API design and gRPC

  • Implement features to support hardware testing and diagnosis of various embedded devices

  • Help set up and build out the local lab and ways of working as one of the first engineers in Malmö

  • Work closely with teams such as EE, Backend, Frontend, Mobile, QA, Factory and Manufacturing

We are looking for you who have
  • Proficiency in C/C++

  • Familiarity with Sigmastar / Ambarella platforms

  • Proficiency with video/audio streaming and transcoding

  • Understanding and experience with ARM platforms

  • Experience with debuggers such as gdb and strace

  • Embedded software development experience in Linux drivers, in both kernel and user mode

  • Familiarity with scripting (shell, Python, Node.js)

  • Familiarity with Git version control

  • A genuine passion for embedded software development and for being part of building up a new team from the ground up

  • A self-motivated, goal-driven team player who enjoys difficult challenges and can deliver on tight schedules

  • A BSc/MSc in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent

  • Fluency in written and spoken English to work effectively with colleagues around the world

Nice to have:

  • Experience with development boards such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino or BeagleBoard

  • Experience with build systems such as OpenWRT, BuildRoot or Yocto

  • Familiarity with standard hardware protocols (GPIO, USB, UART, PWM, flash, SPI, I2C...)

Additional information
  • Start: By agreement

  • Location: Malmö

  • Scope: Full-time

  • Employment type: Permanent position, hybrid setup

Applicants must live in Sweden and hold a valid work permit at the time of application to be considered for this role

Selection is ongoing, so please apply as soon as possible.
