Embedded Firmware Engineer
Description
About the job
Join our Long-Range BU (Business Unit) R&D organisation and develop the platform firmware that the rest of our software relies on. Your role in the team is to abstract the complexity of the hardware away from the higher layers of firmware: improving the RTOS, drivers and common APIs, and supporting your colleagues with build systems, CI/CD pipelines and the tooling around them.
This is an individual-contributor position with a broad scope that can be shaped around your interests and skills, and it lets you grow your expertise across a wide range of areas. You will be supported by experienced colleagues and modern development tooling, and your work will end up in products deployed in millions of connected devices.
Key responsibilities
Develop, maintain and optimise embedded firmware, including RTOS configuration, device drivers and common platform APIs, so that feature development on top of them stays efficient.
Maintain and improve the cross-platform build environment shared by our firmware teams, and CI pipelines, using Docker or other containerised setups.
Bring up and develop firmware in pre-silicon environments such as emulators and FPGA platforms.
Write unit and integration tests for the firmware you develop, and keep them running in our CI pipelines (Bamboo, Jenkins).
Share your knowledge through code reviews, documentation and technical guidance to the team.
Key Qualifications and Skills
Master's degree in Computer Science, Communications Engineering, or a related technical field.
5+ years of experience in embedded software development.
Very good knowledge of C, especially in environments with restricted memory and performance constraints.
Strong problem solving and debugging skills.
Good understanding of the Arm Cortex-M architecture and embedded operating systems, such as Zephyr.
Experience with CI/CD tooling, git and automation.
Comfortable using modern AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day work.
Prior pre-silicon development experience (emulation, FPGA) is an advantage.
Familiarity with OFDM based physical layer or RF control development is an advantage.
Personal Skills
The ideal candidate is curious and quick to pick up new technologies, and enjoys making life easier for the people building on top of their work. You communicate clearly in English, both in writing and in person, and you collaborate comfortably across disciplines. You are self-driven, able to prioritise and deliver in a dynamic environment, and equally happy working independently or as part of the team.
Working for Nordic
Working at Nordic, you will be inspired and supported to develop yourself. Our teams enjoy a professional and informal working environment. We value and encourage the continuous development of skills and expertise to the highest levels.
