Embedded Software Engineer - Relocate to Hamilton

Salary: Excellent benefits + hybrid working possibility

Virscient is growing and are looking for a couple of Embedded Software Engineers to join the team.

This isn’t a typical in-house product role. Virscient is a specialist wireless and embedded engineering consultancy helping global customers bring connected products to market. They work on real hardware, real constraints, and real commercial deadlines - solving complex connectivity challenges where performance, latency, reliability and power consumption matter.

If you enjoy technical variety, working close to the metal, and contributing to products that ship globally, this could be for you.

About Virscient

Based in Hamilton, Virscient works primarily with offshore customers across the US and Europe. Projects span:

  • Wireless audio (Bluetooth headsets, earbuds)

  • Connectivity platforms for global product companies

  • Industrial and consumer wireless systems

  • Products requiring deep Bluetooth, WiFi and RF expertise

Engineers typically work in small, focused teams of three to four, often across multiple short-to-medium term projects. Variety is the norm.

The Role

You’ll design, implement and validate embedded software running on real hardware, contributing to products that are heading to market.

This includes:

  • Developing embedded software primarily in C

  • Working close to bare metal and low-level stacks

  • Debugging directly on hardware

  • Contributing Python tooling for validation, testing and automation

  • Modifying and optimising wireless stacks (not just plugging them in)

  • Collaborating with customers on technical trade-offs and design decisions

This is a consulting environment - pace matters, ownership matters, and accountability matters.

What We’re Looking For

Though hiring at a junior - intermediate level, they remain open to engineers of other levels.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience in embedded software development

  • Strong embedded C capability

  • Solid Python skills for validation or tooling

  • Experience working at low levels close to hardware

  • Exposure to WiFi, Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity

  • Confidence debugging complex systems

  • Clear spoken and written English

They’re particularly interested in engineers who have worked on products that have actually shipped.

This role can be based in Hamilton or, for an exceptional technically senior candidate, remote anywhere in NZ with some travel to Hamilton. You MUST have right to work in NZ to be considered. Virscient is an accredited employer so can facilitate the transfer of a visa if you’re currently sponsored by another NZ employer.

Who Thrives Here

Virscient suits engineers who:

  • Like variety and moving between different technical challenges

  • Work well in small, high-performing teams

  • Are comfortable in a founder-led business

  • Can operate at pace without excessive structure

  • Enjoy solving problems that don’t have textbook answers

This is not a place to hide. In a team of this size, everyone contributes. If this sounds like you, get in touch with maia@crescent.co.nz or apply now!
