Embedded Software Engineer
Summary
Lead the embedded software platform for rugged hardware used in mining and construction, focusing on Linux, Yocto, AOSP, and real-time systems.
We’re hiring a Lead Embedded Software Engineer to own the brains of a next-gen hardware platform
We’re working with a US-based industrial technology group that builds hardware used in mining, construction and large-scale infrastructure. Their systems operate in some of the harshest environments on the planet and rely on high-precision positioning, real-time data and embedded intelligence to get the job done.
They’re building a specialist hardware and GNSS team in Lisbon. You will be the engineer who defines and evolves the embedded software platform that runs across multiple products.
Technical Skills:
- Linux kernel customization, including configuration, compilation, and optimization.
- Strong experience with Yocto Project for building and maintaining embedded Linux distributions.
- Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems development.
- Experience with Android Open Source Project (AOSP), building and customizing AOSP for embedded or mobile platforms. Familiarity with HAL layers, system services, and Android build system.
- Experience integrating image sensors and ISP pipelines using available drivers.
- Experience designing generic, reusable software frameworks for embedded products.
- Familiarity with device drivers, BSPs (Board Support Packages), and hardware bring-up.
- Knowledge of cross-compilation, build systems, and toolchains.
- Hands-on debugging with JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and Linux debug tools (gdb, strace, perf).
- Experience with communication protocols (Ethernet, CAN, UART, SPI, I²C, USB, etc.).
- Understanding of real-time constraints and performance optimization in embedded systems
- Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations in embedded devices.
- Version control (Git), CI/CD, and issue tracking tools (Jira, GitLab CI, Jenkins, etc.).
Domain / Product Knowledge:
- Prior work on embedded networking, GNSS, or RF-based products is a strong plus.
- Understanding of system resource constraints (memory, power, CPU utilization).
- Knowledge of industry standards for ruggedized and field-deployed devices.
Soft Skills & Leadership:
- Ability to define system architecture and influence product design from concept through production.
- Proven experience in cross-functional collaboration with hardware, mechanical, and test teams.
- Strong documentation and code quality practices (unit tests, code reviews, design documents).
- Problem-solving, analytical mindset with proven track record of delivering reliable products.
- Mentoring and technical leadership experience is a strong advantage.
