Embedded Systems & Software Developer (Freelance)
Job Description
JN Medsys is focused on developing leading edge digital PCR (dPCR) system.
We are looking for a freelance programmer / developer to support the development of the firmware and engineering control software for the prototype instrument.
The successful candidate will work closely with our engineering team to develop and integrate the control system for motors, sensors, thermal control and other hardware modules, as well as a simple engineering software interface for operating and testing the instrument.
Key Responsibilities
Firmware / Embedded Control
- Develop and modify firmware for controlling the instrument's hardware modules.
- Implement control of multiple stepper motors and motion axes.
- Develop control functions for syringe pumps, valves, actuators, sensors and other electromechanical components.
- Implement motion sequences, homing, positioning and limit/safety functions.
- Develop communication between the embedded controller and host computer.
- Implement thermal control functions for PCR thermal cycling.
- Support integration of the individual modules into a fully automated workflow.
- Implement appropriate error detection, recovery and safety functions.
Engineering Control Software
Develop a simple engineering control application that allows engineers to:
- Initiate the complete automated workflow.
- Run individual modules independently for testing and troubleshooting.
- Manually control individual motors and hardware components.
- Configure operating parameters such as motor positions, speeds, temperatures and timing.
- Display instrument status and sensor information.
- Record system events and error logs.
- Support debugging, calibration and engineering testing.
Requirements
The candidate should have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Embedded systems / firmware development.
- Arduino or similar microcontroller platforms.
- C / C++ programming.
- Linux-based embedded systems.
- Serial communication protocols.
- Stepper motor and motion control.
- Sensors, actuators and electromechanical systems.
- Development of PC-based engineering or instrument-control software.
Experience with Python, C#, Qt, .NET or similar frameworks for developing engineering control interfaces would be advantageous.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience in any of the following would be particularly suitable:
- Laboratory automation.
- Medical or diagnostic instruments.
- Robotics or automated equipment.
- CNC / 3-axis motion systems.
- PCR or thermal cycling systems.
- Optical or fluorescence detection systems.
- Instrument control software.
- Hardware-software integration and prototype development.
Experience in digital PCR or molecular diagnostics is not required, provided the candidate has strong embedded systems and automation experience.
